My mom seems to be having snakes around her house more frequently... any ideas on how to keep them away? So

So far we've seen a black racer and a king snake. This is in Florida.

Why do you want to get rid of them? Black racers, in particular, are pretty chill and tend to be more afraid of you than you are of them.

Anyhow, if you want to really be rid of them, you'll need to ensure their food source is gone. It sounds like your mom has mice.

get some stray or animal shelter cats.. in my experience, having about 6 cats on a property can give you a decent no-snake zone..

they have to be outdoor cats though obviously that like to hunt.. That is what we have always done. but I live on a ranch with a lot of room for cats to roam free..

Actually, thinking about this further, I'm not entirely sure the king snakes are eating mice. They might be eating the racers that are eating mice lol

Keep the king snake, it eats the poisonous snakes. (It isn't dangerous)

Please don't kill them.. I love reptiles and they are one of mans best friends so just don't resort to killing them.

A few suggestions - move hiding spots away from the home. Large piles of sticks, debris, lumber, etc.. Snakes will use it to hide in during the day and in an area with venomous snakes you should exercise caution when moving these items as they may be present in the debris piles.

Do your best to decrease rodent populations. Snakes are actually pretty lazy creatures and will not want to stay long in an area where finding food requires a lot of effort. Also, if there is a koi pond on the property you might want to consider getting rid of it as many species will use it for soaking, drinking water or will eat the fish which flies in the face of not providing a good hunting ground for them.

Outside of that they are pretty much gonna do what snakes do and there is not much of a way to prevent it. I will note that it is a GOOD thing to have kingsnakes on the property. There are native populations of rattlesnakes in Florida and kingsnakes are immune to rattlesnake venom and are their chief predator with many kingsnakes often making an entire diet out of rattlesnakes.

Rattlesnakes are good as well but at least it greatly reduces the risk of having a rattlesnake problem on your mom's property.

The racer isn't dangerous, either.

I believe the two are there due to an underlying rodent problem.

Now mice in and around the home? Those can be dangerous.

I hate snakes with a passion. scare the livin' daylights out of me! I can never understand when someone says "keep it around because it's not poisonous." Keep all of 'em off my lawn!

Because the benefits far outweigh the risks.

I have several black racers and a corn snake at the moment :) They manage the mice coming in from the nature trails and from under the neighbor's deck.

Sounds like a job for Samuel Jackson ...

Those are good snakes to have around - they keep the rodentia in check, but if you insist of being rid of them keep guinea fowl. They will kill all snakes in their territory and they are excellent watch dogs.

Irrational fear. Have you spoken with anyone about this? Not good - it's like being in a prison of your own making.

Just a thought.
