How to invest in gold on the stock market?

I am currently working with a portfolio that isn't doing so well and I am thinking of moving some of it into gold. How should I go about this? Should I buy shares in gold mining companies? I am kind of new to this whole commodities things.

There's an ETF that you can put your money into and it tracks price of gold, it's called GLD

Buy Peter Schiff's book, Crash Proof, the last 3 chapters, he gives a great overview and some more specific recommendations.

I was wondering the same things lately, and I just finished his book.
