According to Section 1501(d)(2)(B) of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare"), there are religious exemptions for "Health Care-Sharing Ministries." The same law is also repeated in Section 5000A(d)(2)(B) of the IRS Code.

Samaritan Ministries is one place where you can join and receive the exemption from "Obamacare's" individual mandate. Reason TV even did a case study comparing the benefits of Samaritan Ministries to "Obamacare."

Yup. And according to the laws in a bunch of states or something like that, the individual mandate doesn't apply to the residents of those states. We will have to see. Will Obama go after the Amish? Will he go after the lower middle class in the states that banned the individual mandate such as OH, NH, AZ, TX and so on?

Now that is interesting. Potentially, another way is to file for a claim of refund (so long as it is not erroneous) and in doing so it places you below the exemption threshold for being required to file:

"(e) Exemptions
No penalty shall be imposed under subsection (a) with respect to—
...
(2) Taxpayers with income below filing threshold
Any applicable individual for any month during a calendar year if the individual’s household income for the taxable year described in section 1412(b)(1)(B) of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is less than the amount of gross income specified in section 6012(a)(1) with respect to the taxpayer."

Wow this is an excellent post. So wonderful to find a way to peacefully nullify the ACA and learn about a reemergence of mutual aide. Thank you for taking the time to share this post. Will definitely reach out to both to see if I can get a representative from one of the companies to be on the show.

Ya that's a little cheaper I guess, I still pay a lot less right now but my employer covers a lot of the cost and my premiums haven't skyrocketed yet.

A little cheaper but still where are people that don't have $20 left at the end of the month going to come up with $165.

Members of the basic ministry agree to share expenses incurred for medical treatments specified in the Membership Guidelines. The amount of the monthly share is based on household size (see chart below), regardless of your medical history, age, or other factor.

Membership Type Monthly Share
Singles $165
Couples $315
Single-Parent Family $230
Two-Parent Family $370

Just existing in the US (after 2016) costs ~$50 per month- Minimum.
Interest accrues on the penalty so don't be late!

Since Obamacare allows me to wait until I get sick to buy insurance, I don't see a financial incentive to join one of these.

However, I do hope to see this idea take off. When and if it does, it will be inevitable that insurance industry lobbyists will convince Congress to ban these ministries. And the more popular they are by that time, the more public of a fight that will be. And a public fight where politicians are actively fighting to take away people's right to cooperate with one another like this is exactly the kind of thing we need.

I wonder how difficult it would be to start one of these on a smaller scale, with membership costs of less than $50/month.

Also, btw, I don't think you're right that that's the minimum. If your income is low enough, you can get on Medicaid at no cost and pay no fine.

Your employer isn't covering anything in reality. You are. What he is "covering" he does so with money that might have otherwise gone to you, so in the end it is you who are paying.

Philosophically that is true, but may be dependent on your employer's willingness to negotiate salary based on whether or not you signup for the health insurance they offer.

We might go this route, for us and our employees! We'll be looking into both Samaritan and CHM.

Thank you so much!

OK, OK. I'll share the 3rd rail for getting out of ObamaCare. If moving to OH, AZ, NH... doesn't work for you, and if converting to Amish or some similar religious doesn't work for you (btw, bonus points for OH because voters there banned the individual mandate and it has the highest Amish population), there is another way. Be what the federal government considers poor. That's something like making less than $10k a year for a single person. Now, where I live, there is plenty of money to live on. But, I guess in places like NY and MD it isn't or something, so those folks are considered the poor. And if you are poor, you don't have to get ObamaCare. In fact, if you are poor, in most states, thanks to ObamaCare, you can actually get government healthcare for pretty much nothing. Thank you big brother!
