How are the yout's doing?

lol, no way, uncle oyarde. Maybe someday when I have a fair amount of money I will. I shop for groceries on the cheap...Trader Joe's, Fry's, Wally World, etc.

I have never been in a Trader Joes grocery , but it sounds similar to a place I would cut school to go to when I was 15 . I sold ginseng , muskrat, fox and occasional mink & beaver pelts there, maybe picked up a six pack , some fish line , couple of boxes of shells .Get high , sneak back into school , forge my study hall slips , drop them off. My taxes were lower then ....

I don't talk to youths (18 and younger) anymore (aside from freedomfanatic)...unless they're bagging my groceries or something...how are kids nowadays generally dealing with living through some of the greatest economic, societal, and political turmoil in 'Murica evarrr? /curious (they do seem to be experiencing mass unemployment)

I haz an 18 year old. The military option is far too easy for them, and the economy is so horrid that they just sign up.

Keep 'hitting' them with reason.

I was the same way. The choice is considered as a "sure thing." (for immediate money and to advance a career choice) It is far from.

The last thing needed is more kids around the world.

One of my nephews pissed away 5 years going to college and dropping out, off and on. After that he "joined" the army but had medical problems during basic training so he was discharged (or whatever you call it since he didn't actually make it). Now he has a full-time blue collar job. He could have been doing that for 5 years and probably be making double of what he's making now and not have wasted so much money on the schooling system.

I have nieces doing well in college and will likely end up being CPAs or physical therapists like their mothers. It's kind of funny. I still have some younger nieces and nephews but thus far, the girls and boys are doing what the previous generation did. The girls go to college to get white collar jobs and the boys join the blue collar workforce.

It is true too, makes me laugh now when I think about it , they would probably jail me these days , then they all just felt they needed to catch me to preserve the public and save me .Fat chance.

Let's see - the few places where I encounter youth:

Murphy's Pizza - three (3) high school aged guys who are happy, talkative and make pizza per my requests with me watching over them

Holiday Gas Station - two (2) high school age and two (2) young adults who were attentive, accurate and very pleasant (under pressure of long lines as well)

Local business where I work - two (2) high school age and one young adult who come to work on time, are efficient and great with customer service.

Young man who lives with us (son) who worked his butt off this summer, for no pay, and has a pretty good attitude most of the time.

I have hope in our youth.

Except for price , you mean.

Trader Joe's is a gimmicky store. They specialize in stuff you can't get anywhere else. And they really have a pretty limited amount of items. They don't have a full meat department, all their produce is wrapped, and almost all their dry goods are sold under their own brand name. No bakery, no deli...

There are lots of things they do well - cheeses, frozen food, chocolates, and wines come to mind immediately. And their customers are fiercely loyal.

All of that is great business, and even goes to show that you actually can compete with WalMart if you don't try to be WalMart.

WalMart's game is just the opposite. It's like comparing apples to oranges. Trader Joes is a fun place to shop, but it isn't the place to go to fill up your cart every week.

Depends on what you're looking for. The price:quality ratio is generally better than Wally World in my experience. Even poor young folks like yours truly can stock up on quality food pretty affordably. I will grant you that they don't carry a significant amount of produce, though. The deli section isn't huge, but they carry some good stuff.

Also, shopping for a family is different than shopping for one, I think.

I've been buying bottles of rum at TJ's for $3.99 that cost $8-10 at the grocery store or liquor store, but I think tastes better. And of course they have the $2.49 chuck (bottle of wine) that is $6-$8 a the grocery store, but I think tastes much better. So they do actually have some products, even in the food section that are cheaper than the grocery store.

My gf is gluten free now, they have a gluten free pizza for $5. I've been to restaurants that charge an extra $5 just to make you a gluten free pizza.

Trader Joe's doesn't sell 18 eggs for .89 and they don't sell a gallon of milk for $1.99.. An ex-roommate bought 18 eggs for .89 one time, I couldn't bring myself to eat them.. I know what their coup looks like, what their daily activity looks like and what they are fed... I lose my appetite.

I shop around a lot, and Trader Joe's does have the best/cheapest option for cage free/pastured eggs. They come out to $.25 each, or $3/dozen. There are options for eggs around here that cost $8/dozen that are nutritionally optimal, but I would raise the chickens myself before paying those prices.. In the mean time I'll take the nutritionally mediocre choice. TJ's also has the best/cheapest options for medium to high quality produce and meat and coffee and wine.

So in some senses it is cheapest option.. it's just I see going to the grocery store as a short term solution to getting some products cheaper but a bad longterm solution economically as I believe my health will be the worse for it.

Someone told me that Trader Joe's are set up as co-ops of some sort. Anyone know if that is true?
