red light cameras are outahere!!!

Houston's red-light cameras will go dark on Monday morning, officials said Friday.

Houstonians voted to end the use of red-light cameras in Proposition 3 on Election Day. The election results will be certified Monday.

City officials asked the contractor for Houston's 70 red-light cameras to turn them off Monday.

"We absolutely respect the outcome of the election. ATS has ageed to abide by the city's request that the cameras go dark at 10 o'clock on Monday morning," said George Hittner, the vice president of American Traffic Solutions.

He said the city sent him a letter asking his company to turn off the cameras Monday morning, when the election results will become official. American Traffic Solutions responded with a letter agreeing to end the cameras.

"While we certainly respect the election outcome, we are a bit disappointed. This is a safety issue. And there is no doubt over the course of the last 3 1/2 years, the city of Houston, the police department and American Traffic Solutions have partnered together to save hundreds of lives and eliminate thousands of accidents," Hittner said.

The contract was expected to run through 2014. ATS said it spent $75,000 to $100,000 to hook up each camera.

In the letter to the city, ATS said it is clear that the company and the city have a difference of opinion as to the termination options available.

"Do you have a plan to file a lawsuit at this point?" KPRC Local 2's Ryan Korsgard asked Hittner.

"ATS has no standing to bring an election contest. So, everything else that comes after that will really be how things go from here with the city. We are absolutely ready and willing to talk to the city at this point. But those conversations have not taken place yet," Hittner said.

Even though the cameras will be turned off Monday morning, it is not yet known when they will actually be removed from the intersections. The city and ATS have not yet worked that out.

We didn't lose our freedoms overnight and we're not going to get them back overnight either.

Every step will be a battle.

Assclown.

I hope we can eventually put that company out of business.

Hyperbole much?

Hopefully neighboring cities and counties will follow suit. The intersection by my house has one of these and that damn flash at night is annoying.

Good stuff. please post all the paperwork and steps needed to do this online somewhere to make it easy for any group to do this in their city.

they say the cameras will be "turned off", but who really knows if they are in fact off?

you know that those using the cameras for facial recognition and other purposes will demand the camera be left operational while in place...they will simply cease issuing traffic citations to eliminate public awareness.

'round here, the cameras face the people stopped at the lights, not the rear license places of cars passing through intersections (Florida law does not require front mounted license plates) so what is one to think?

Until the cameras come down, it is business as usual, do not doubt that!
