House Passes Bill Requiring Proof of Citizenship to Vote

SEAN MORAN 10 Jul 2024

The House on Wednesday passed legislation that would expand proof-of-citizenship requirements to vote in federal elections and impose voter roll purge requirements on states.

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act passed through the House in a 221-198 vote, with five Democrats voting in favor of the Republican bill.

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) introduced the legislation, and told Breitbart News Daily in June that there is “repeated evidence” of non-citizens voting.

“Let me just say this about the overall state of the election issue,” Roy said. “We’ve got repeated evidence of those who are here illegally — or, or whether they’re here legally — but non-citizens voting.”

I worked with a guy from Ireland back in the 90s. Legal resident alien, but definitely not a citizen. Virginia had enacted "motor voter registration" wherein the DMV automatically registered people to vote when they got or renewed a driver's license.
He got registered to vote even back then, and when Virginia was pretty solidly red.
Being a decent guy he called the state board of elections and explained that he shouldn't have been registered to vote, but they gave him the standard government bureaucrat response of not really understanding the problem and offering no resolution.

But you know, I don't believe this bill would solve a single thing if it managed to pass. You can make all the laws you want - but the reality is there's a guy I know in Philadelphia whose dead mother has voted democrat for 20 years. Pretty sure there's already a law against that. You can impose rules on the SBE's but unless you start defining these things in terms of criminal acts, nothing is going to change. Until a law says individual people who falsify voter rolls are guilty of a federal class C felony punishable by at least 10 years in prison, then nothing is going to change.
