House Kills Amendment Protecting Americans from Credit Discrimination Based on Politics

The OP doesn't follow facts. It has lots of "could" and "maybe". It is a bad article. But then again, it is Breitbart.

Something something pot, something something kettle.

You should really review your own threads if you're complaining about facts vs. maybes.

Democrats vote against a bill which would add regulations to an industry and people here are upset. Maybe it is just that it was Democrats and not the bit about stopping a new regulation? If it was Trump- "ah see how many regulations he is getting rid of!"

Are you honestly trying to tell me that the left voted against this in a spirit of "de-regulation" and NOT because they like the idea that political enemies can be destroyed by the banksters, simply by de-funding those who are politically "problematic".

Seriously...you're trying to say that?

And there is no indication that banking wants to discriminate against customers based on their politics. An amendment in search of a problem.

Sez you...

Bank of America to Stop Financing Makers of Military-Style Guns

Stop gaslighting people...it is getting really tiresome.

Not just the banks, but all manner of leftist, globalist, hyper-corps are more than willing to piss off their customers in order to pursue "woke" political objectives.

Wells Fargo, Fifth Third Banks Yank $5.4 Million From ‘Bigoted’ Brown Kids At Christian Schools

JANUARY 31, 2020 By Joy Pullmann

Wells Fargo and Fifth Third announced this week they will no longer donate to help poor, minority children attend better Christian schools, because the banks’ leaders think Christian teachings about sex are bigoted. Last year, the two corporations donated $5.4 million to Florida’s tax-credit scholarship program, which assists more than 100,000 children, approximately 70 percent of whom are black, Hispanic, and multiracial.

“All of us at Wells Fargo highly value diversity and inclusion, and we oppose discrimination of any kind,” said a spokeswoman.

The subject of the OP, the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau is actually set up to fight against such actions.

What protections do I have against credit discrimination?

Responsible borrowers use credit to go to college, open businesses, and buy homes. American consumers should have the opportunity to use credit to build a better future for themselves and their loved ones. Credit discrimination prevents people from having access to these opportunities, and can make credit more expensive.

What is credit discrimination?
The Equal Credit Opportunity Act makes it illegal for a creditor to discriminate in any aspect of credit transaction based on certain characteristics.

In addition, the Fair Housing Act makes many discrimination practices in home financing illegal.

It is illegal to:

Refuse you credit if you qualify for it
Discourage you from applying for credit
Offer you credit on terms that are less favorable, like a higher interest rate, than terms offered to someone with similar qualifications
Close your account

On the basis of:

Race or color
Religion
National origin
Sex (including gender)*
Marital status
Age (as long as you are old enough to enter into a contract)
Receipt of income from any public assistance program
Exercising in good faith your rights under the Consumer Credit Protection Act.

*Currently, the law supports arguments that the prohibition against sex discrimination also affords broad protection from discrimination based on a consumer’s gender identity and sexual orientation.

Our work

The CFPB is unique among financial regulators. Other regulators focus on the safety and soundness of the financial institutions first. The CFPB is the first to focus primarily on the American consumer. To learn more about our fair lending efforts, check out our recent report to Congress or our recent blog posts.

We work to ensure fair, equitable, and nondiscriminatory access to credit for both individuals and communities through:

Data-driven research and analysis of consumer financial markets and services;
Enforcement and oversight of Federal fair lending laws; and
Promotion of fair lending compliance and education among industry, fair lending, civil rights, and consumer and community advocates.

That's as may be.

I just want you to retract this statement:

And there is no indication that banking wants to discriminate against customers based on their politics.

Clearly that is not true.

Banks, and the larger financial establishment as a whole, is very willing and is increasingly discriminating and denying financial services to people and organizations that are politically or culturally "problematic".

And that that was the reason the House leftists voted against this bill's amendment.

Now, if you want to make the case that a free market in banking and property rights absolutely gives the right discriminate for any reason or no reason at all, then fine.

But it's got to cut both ways, and right now it does not.

Join a local credit union. All I'm gonna say.

I haven't banked with a national chain since SunTrust got bailout money. That year I closed out my account and joined a credit union. Hell they treat me nicer than my bank ever did. Each year in December I get a check from them based on performance. That's in addition to interest, which pays higher rates than SunTrust ever did.

oh, and when's the last time your bank ever let you vote on the people running it?
