High Fructose Bait and Switch

Anyone try Jones Soda?

I have, its pretty good. But I can't find it anywhere around here now, and it was pretty expensive. When I got it, it was like a dollar for a 12oz bottle. BUT, that was at an overpriced grocery store, but that was the only place I could find it. I haven't been there since, which was a few years ago, so I don't know if they still have it or not.

I like the Jones line of sodas, especially the Black Cherry cola. It's a hard brand to find in my area of Indiana. My only complaint with Jones is that the sodas are a little TOO sweet. I wish they would bring out an all-sugar line with only about 50% the sugar as normal.

I bought a 6-pack of Zevia last week at whole foods... The problem I have with it, is that it also lists Erythritol as an ingredient.. even before it lists stevia. So it would appear it still contains an artificial sweetener

Is Erythritol artificial? I thought it was some sort of natural sugar alcohol, distilled from fruit juices.

According to Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erythritol
Erythritol ((2R,3S)-butane-1,2,3,4-tetraol) is a natural sugar alcohol (a type of sugar substitute) which has been approved for use in the United States[1] and throughout much of the world. It occurs naturally in fruits and fermented foods [2]. At the industrial level, it is produced from glucose by fermentation with a yeast, Moniliella pollinis[1]. It is 60–70% as sweet as table sugar yet it is almost non-caloric, does not affect blood sugar, does not cause tooth decay, and is absorbed by the body, therefore unlikely to cause gastric side effects unlike other sugar alcohols. Under U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) labeling requirements, it has a caloric value of 0.2 calories per gram (95% less than sugar and other carbohydrates), though nutritional labelling varies from country to country—some countries like Japan label it as zero-calorie, while European Union regulations currently label it and all other sugar alcohols at 2.4 kcal/g.

As near as I can see, that makes it just about as "natural" as processed cane or beet sugar, but not nearly as synthetic as aspartame or sucralose.

Some products are starting to go back to sugar and making quite a big deal over it too..."Made with REAL sugar!!!!"

If I could find it here in Atlanta, I'd get it. I LOVE the Green Apple soda. Wal-Mart here managed to get in several cases of Heritage Dr. Pepper. I HOPE & PRAY that PepsiCo will continue making Throwback Pepsi & Mountain Dew cause they are the shiznit.

I drink Jones. Preferred the Throwback Pepsi / Mt Dew and Heritage Dr Pep.

Jones uses Inverted Cane Sugar. Inverted cane sugar is regular cane sugar heated to make a thicker, sweeter, gooier syrup. It may also be (not clear on this) that the sucrose molecule is broken down into the fructose and the glucose by the inversion.

I would tell Jones to skip the inversion process, and just use regular cane sugar.

Gatorade G2 is NOW low calorie and contains SUCRALOSE instead of High Fructose corn syrup. Watch out for many other products to follow suit, many 'sugar free' products already have. Notice no more 'splenda' labels? This is why.. the sucralose is flying in under the radar.

Time to boycott anything that doesn't use real sugar.

Well your best bet is to just cut down on processed foods as much as you can. I know I always feel infinitely better when I cut that trash out. Wouldn't touch Soda or Gatorade these days.

I heard, haven't really looked into it though, that "Stevia in the Raw" is almost 90% table sugar...

So beware of stuff like that.

Yeah, we just got some of the Mountain Dew Throwback. Normally we don't really like Mountain Dew, or even buy soda to keep at the house. Since it said "made with real sugar," we thought we'd check it out. It's pretty good.

All of the products with real sugar are also really bad for you.
They use the refined white sugar which is terrible. Brown sugar is better but still not that great for you.

The only form of REAL unprocessed sugar is evaporated cane juice.

Stevia is also good for you. I can tell this because the FDA once banned it meaning Stevia is healthy :D

Zippy, you cant get the G2 kind without sucralose anymore. The G2 is the one with electrolytes vs the regular stuff.

LMAO. A Choice? Try finding ANYTHING with real sugar? Ha! It's blind fools who keep supporting these artificial sweetend products which leads to a lack of choice.

Now that public has finally been educated about HFCS, you'll see consumers making EDUCATED choices. The problem is, people are still idiots when it comes to health.. low calorie = healthy! And they slide in ASPARTAME or now, SUCROSE and remove the 'spenda' logo. It deceptive marketing and suckers fall for it a lot.

Lets not pretend an artificial sweetener is somehow magically good for you.

Ugh it doesn't even work because if something has those cancerous chemicals in it, they eat more of it, which defeats the purpose.

Trader Joe's sells all natural sports drinks and vitamin water, FYI.:)

For me, vitamin waters are too much sugar and not enough vitamins to offset the sugars. I would rather drink plain water. There are about 2.5 servings in a bottle and each serving has 13 grams of sugar so you are getting 32 grams of sugar- about the same as a soda. That is about two and a half tablestpoons of sugar in a bottle. http://recipes.howstuffworks.com/vitaminwater2.htm It is marketed as a "healthier" alternative to sodas- but really isn't. Just like the sugar/ HFC deception.
