Commissioners reject Sustainable Communities initiative

Henderson County commissioners have voted for the time being to reject participation in a federally funded Sustainable Communities initiative, after the man they appointed to represent the county reported to the board that it is a “rigged, despicable and costly project.”

GroWNC, funded by a $1.6 million grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, is a three-year project that seeks to develop regional and local strategies for “economic prosperity, quality growth and sustainable development” through a consortium of local governments, nonprofit organizations and businesses in the five-county region of Buncombe, Haywood, Henderson, Madison and Transylvania counties.

The grant was awarded to and the program is being managed by Land-of-Sky Regional Council, a multi-county local government planning and development organization based in Asheville. Executive Director Joe McKinney said GroWNC is a planning tool to identify long-term issues that are important to each of the five counties, and that Land-of-Sky’s board of directors wanted the project to have a strong focus, in particular, on job creation in the region.
