Well, as it seems as of this past Thursday, I have been laid off until work picks back up. Imagine that...land surveying going bottom up. thanks US Government! This now makes 2 jobs since Ive been married that Ive lost due to our government making the wrong choices.

So I have always been interested in either being an EMT or a Cop. If we have any cops in here Ild greatly like to hear the good and the bad of that job. This would be a county cop position or perhaps a Georgia State Trooper position. I need pay scales, work schedules, blah blah...

My wife is an EMT and soon to be a Paramedic so I know that jobs ins and outs, just need a cops view point.

I get great satisfaction when I can help people and make a difference in their lives, so I figure its either by helping the sick and injured or by putting away the bad guys.

Funny how this all works out huh? I loose my jobs due to the government but yet I might choose a government job to hopefully get me back in the game.

Please respond only if you have experience in the Police position and EMT field.

Thanks!:)

How do you feel that the government was at fault for your layoff?

As for becoming a cop:

Pros: Job security, public service, decent pay, company car, (sometimes) strong union, good pastries.

Cons: Many on RPF will call you the Antichrist, crappy pay considering that you're risking your life just about every day, possibility of getting shot at work, bodily fluids, you routinely interact with people at their worst, paperwork (lots), tendency to suck your service weapon at about the 15 year mark (a horrible job for self-chastizing introverts).

Push: Quasi-military force structure. If you've been in and enjoyed the military, it'll be like old home week. If not, it can get very oppressive.

(Not currently an LEO myself, but have worked in that field).

job of 8 years ...Levis...lost due to NAFTA, it went to Europe, Mexico, Malaysia, China etc...

Job 0f 4 years...slow economy due to government and the FED Res. messing with the markets, gas, inflation, ...no more work at my job.

We have went from being 1 year work backlog to absolutely nothing last Thursday. It started slowing last summer for us. The last 2 months have been 4 day weeks and just barely hanging on. Regular people cant or dont want land surveys if they cant afford gas or food and or are also laid off.:(
