I agree with the vast majority of your point. However I've never voted for the "they look like me" person in my life. I've voted 3rd party when I was in a state where the demographics gave me no chance to elect someone on issues (because sufficient 3rd party votes nationally could gain them more traction) and I've voted for Ron Paul (yep even wrote him in when I didn't realize they'd just throw the ballot out).We were all like that... we all, at one point, would vote for a person that has the same same color, religion, gender, and etc etc as yourself.
I would give them some time... Although, time is running out XD..
Anyway I agree with the point your making but it's not literally accurate
