So a few people I've tried to tell about Ron Paul seemed interested at first. Then we get into personal liberties and they say "Well what personality liberties have we lost?" So I start telling them about phone tapping, etc. And I have had people actually say to me "Well I don't care if they do that as long as it catches terrorists, I don't have anything to hide." I just get so angry I almost hit these people! Who is this STUPID!? They just don't get it at all.

I try to tell them about the constitution and why the founders gave us these freedoms in relation to what the British were doing and they just DON'T GET IT! One of them even told me they would be fine with the government regulating the internet for safety. When I meet people like this it sucks away all the hope I have for the future. :(

I went in to a mortgage broker the other day, should have been a 15 minute thing to fill out some paperwork.. Then the sheet for signing the Patriot Act waiver came up and we got in a 2 hour discussion about it... He had no problem with it.. all about catching them terrorists.. "If we had this before 9/11 we would have caught them, etc".. I told him that if every person on U.S. soil had a personal gov't nanny that reported our every move back to a central agency that we could probably eliminate 99.9% of criminal activity in the country. After I said that, he began to understand my side of the argument.

He had never heard of Ron Paul but is a conservative republican. The other day he called me and he said since we talked like 4 other people (including his own mom) have asked him about Ron Paul. I think we gained a vote. :D

People are scared. They will give up lots of freedom for "safety" from the gov't. Some Republicans are the most willing as well.

That is absolutely the perfect response. I always try and use a point very similar to that, and its a great and very relevant point...

btw... there was a memo entitled, "Bin Laden determined to attack inside the United States" before 9/11. Some agency also knew that suspicious person were learning how to fly planes without learning how to land them before 9/11.

You really think the federal government is competent enough to determine what's useful when it's been inundated with information?

I usually turn it around on them...

Like my Mormon friend for example. I said, ok... what if some Mormon guy went and blew up a building in God's name? well, now you... as a fellow Mormon are now subject to being watched as a terrorist. God forbid you say the word "bomb" while your phone is being wiretapped, then you'll be on the terrorist watch list, can't get on a plane, and before you know it you could land in Gitmo with no right to an attorney or trial. Fact is, today you may not have anything to hide, but depending on who is in power tomorrow, you may.

Now, I say it jokingly, not to scare them... but it does spark the "what ifs?" in their mind.

(watch especially from 3:20 min)

Then you know what to tell them.

Hebeas Corpus and Enemy Combatants

The average person could really careless here unfortunately. Especially some of the eldery that came to caucus here in Vegas.

I don't see us gaining much ground with people by using the video as tatics. I think we are much better focusing on tax cuts than wire tapping for most people.

One of my arguments would be that a foreign policy of peace, commerce and friendship is the only way to end the terrorist threat.

Its hard to get trough to people I know. But when someone asks what liberties or rights have been taken, this is a short answer.

Enemy combatant: Every US citizen can be detained as an enemy combatant.

Habeas corpus: When held as a "enemy combatant" you have no rights whatsoever. They dont even have to notify your family that you've been imprisoned.

"You can be taken at any moment, without legal aid, without even been told why you are being imprisoned, you can be held indefinitely, without a trial, and you ask what personal liberties we have lost?"

One of my best friends is a Ron Paul supporter and said this exact same thing.

Go figure.

I don't think it's a big issue for most people. My point is that when talking to someone like that just switch to another issues.

It's like trying to pick up a date, you have to feel her out and you never focus on things she isn't interested
