Called Rep Dingell since he's my new guy after this McCotter fiasco goes to general and apparently Dingy is still looking into the matter.
 
I called because my congresswoman is not a cosponsor of this bill. When I called to see how she would vote, her staff member was pretty much clueless and didn't know how she would vote. I told her to pass along the message that the members of her district are for a full audit. If she does not vote for this bill, she has some serious explaining to do.

My Rep's office (Ruppersberger - D- MD) said they hadn't been able to talk to him on the issue or whatever...

Sen. Cardin (D -MD) sent me an email back saying he was a co-sponsor of S.604, which doesn't seem to be what we're after, or is it?

Thank you for contacting me about the "Federal Reserve Sunshine Act of 2009" (S. 604), which was referred to the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs on March 15, 2009. I am a co-sponsor of this bill and strongly support an audit of the Federal Reserve System (Fed).

The Federal Reserve Sunshine Act directs the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to complete an audit of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and of the twelve Federal Reserve Banks before the end of 2010. It also mandates that the GAO provide a detailed report of its findings to Congress.

Fed policy has been at the center of the government's response to the financial crisis. On several recent occasions, the Fed has lowered the federal funds and discount rates. It has also provided liquidity directly to the financial system through new policy tools. In many instances during the past months, the Fed has taken action as authorized in a clause of the Federal Reserve Act meant to be used in "unusual or exigent circumstances." This clause had not previously been invoked since the Great Depression. I think it is important and appropriate for Congress to review the Fed's actions.

I am committed to taking timely and targeted steps to lessen the severity of this recession. We must continue to take bipartisan action to restore confidence in our economy and must closely examine our financial system. Conservative, moderate, and liberal economists all agree that strong action, which will put Americans back to work and restore confidence in our future, is required.

S. 604 is the Audit the Fed bill in the Senate during the LAST Congress.

The bill we need Senators to support in this Congress is S. 202.

Senator Cardin hasn't cosponsored S. 202 in this Congress so please continue to pressure him to do so.

I confirmed that Ken Calvert, District 44 of California will be voting for this. He's one of the original co-sponsors.

My congressman hopped on the "co-sponsor" early, Robert Hurt R-5 Virginia. I just called and spoke to one of his assistants. It was just a kindly reminder for him to vote, encourage others to vote and I thanked him.
 
I called. The guy on the phone sounded stressed (I know Berman doesn't like this bill because when I sent emails I got back the 'I can't always answer each email' form which I get when he is not going to vote the way I want.) BUT the guy on the phone asked for my name, address and email, sounding more stressed the more I said. Berman has been redistricted and is running against ANOTHER INCUMBENT in November. It will be very interesting to see how he votes.
 
I made a call earlier, and an assistant said Rep. Honda will be voting tomorrow but doesn't have a public position on the bill yet. I left a note pointing out the Fed has been around for almost 100 years and it seems unlikely that they have been politically independent as the chairmain states. The only way we can verify that is with the audit, so we can then compare it to lobbyists and activity of people in Congress, etc.

In Honda's email response from before, he said: "I agree that transparency and oversight of the Federal Reserve System is important, and you can be sure that I will keep your views in mind as this and other legislation regarding Federal Reserve transparency and oversight are considered in Congress."

I called Berman too. I reminded the staff that Berman's opponent in the general election (Brad Sherman) has cosponsored the common sense bill.

I wondering if he's checking addresses to the point of determining if we are still going to be constituents for the November vote?
