Guns Don't Kill People, Gun Control Kills People

In Kyrgyzstan, the majority ethny has been having a pogrom against the Uzbek minority. At least 124 are dead and no less than 75,000 people have fled their homes.

Here’s a story from February 2008 which shows how something like this happens.

Ministerial calls for members of the public in Kyrgyzstan to be able to purchase firearms for self-defence have been criticised as foolhardy. Observers say Kyrgyzstan has enough stability and crime problems as things stand without putting more guns into circulation.

The suggestion was made last week by Kyrgyz justice minister Marat Kaipov as part of a set of proposed changes to the existing law on weapons.

Kaipov said it might help combat rising crime levels if “every criminal knew that if he visited a house without an invitation, he might get a bullet through his head”.

This is not time someone has floated the idea of liberalising gun ownership in Kyrgyzstan. In the early Nineties, when the country had just gained its independence, the then interior minister, Felix Kulov, called for weapons to be distributed among ordinary people. However, the rest of the government refused to allow this.

In 2006, after a series of shocking murders of well-known politicians, parliament again returned to the subject of whether elected deputies, at least, should be allowed to carry guns.

After the change in leadership in March 2005, another two parliamentarians were shot in Bishkek and a third was killed during a prison visit.

In response, parliament amended the law in December 2006 to allow members of parliament to carry guns during their term in office. Prior to the December election, almost one-third of sitting members had availed themselves of this right.

Of course the Kyrgyz parliament exempted itself from the gun control laws.

While most public figures have come out against the justice minister’s proposal, political scientist Tamerlan Ibraimov suspects there is some public support for the idea because so many people feel unprotected from criminals.

At the same time, Ibraimov said making firearms freely available could have disastrous consequences.

“If it is done on a large scale, we will face a big problem in the future,” he said. “After obtaining weapons, people might have a great temptation to commit crimes.”

Parliamentarian Zainidin Kurmanov agreed. Simplifying the procedure by which people can buy arms would effectively mean the state admitting its own failure to guarantee their basic security.

God forbid the people lose faith in the almighty state! Or is the parliamentarian saying God forbid a government confess its impotence?

When the Kyrgyz military was called on to restore order, they actually joined in the looting.

With the recent Supreme Court ruling reasserting the right to bear arms, it’s a good time to remind ourselves why this is one of the most important rights of all and the Founders put it right behind freedom of speech.

Another important lesson to learn: as usual, the ones who most desire peace are the merchants.

Guns don't kill people, just those scary black guns with those long magazines. I've seen it in the movies, they can shoot 3 miles through 5 bullet proof vests then blow up a tank! Those definitely need to be banned ;'(

History has repeatedly shown that gun control is about subjecting, not protecting, a nation's citizens. Nazi Germany provides a perfect example. Hitler boasted: "1935 will go down in History! For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration! Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient and the world will follow our lead to the future!"

Of course, some citizens could own firearms. All you had to do was join one of the government's terror organizations.

"Germans who wish to use firearms should join the SS or the SA - ordinary citizens don't need guns, as their having guns doesn't serve the state." - Heinrich Himmler.

"All military type firearms are to be handed in immediately...The SS, SA and Stahlhelm give every responsible opportunity of campaigning with them. Therefore anyone who does not belong to one of the above-named organizations and who unjustifiably nevertheless keeps his weapon...must be regarded as an enemy of the national government." - SA Oberfuhrer of Bad Tolz, March, 1933

Jews, of course, weren't allowed to join these organizations, thereby completely eradicating their right to own a weapon. The German Firearms Act of 1937 stated, "No civilian is to have a firearm without a permit and permits shall not be issued to persons suspected of acting against the state. For Jews, this permission will not be granted."

The inability to own firearms left Jews and other "undesirables" without a means of self protection, making them easy targets when the Nazis began their horrendous campaign to force them into ghettos, cargo trains, or concentration camps. The Nazis were fully aware that an unarmed citizenry is easy to dominate.

Tyrants the world over, from Mao Tse Tung, Pol Pot, Stalin, and Idi Amin, to the British Empire, have long used gun control as a means of subjecting the people. Victims of ethnic or religious genocide in Turkey or Rwanda could speak to the importance of an armed populace in preventing atrocities by the government.

Our nation's founders had enormous foresight, and sought to prevent against this type of governmental tyranny: [The Constitution guarantees] "the advantage of being armed which Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation. . . (where) the governments are afraid to trust the people with arms."- James Madison, Federalist Papers, No. 46

“If the representatives of the people betray their constituents, there is then no recourse left but in the exertion of that original right of self-defense...” – Alexander Hamilton

Just to set the record straight on gun control. It's more accurate to talk about the Soviets than Nazi Germany. That quote is not accurate and is folklore.

I actually knew a Hungarian immigrant named Bella, who lived under both the Nazis and later was forced to leave or be killed in Hungary during the 56' Budapest uprising against the Soviets

He was fond of saying how it was the Soviet's that came house to house to collect the weapons and that it was much easier to live under the Nazis and possess arms.

I disagree. American citizens must be free to arm themselves with any type of weaponry they can afford to obtain. The Founding Fathers made clear that the Second Amendment protects not only the right to individual self defense, but more importantly, the right to use force against the federal government if the government betrays the Constitution or the citizenry.

Jefferson proposed for the Virginia Constitution in 1776 that, "No free man shall ever be de-barred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain their right to keep and bear arms is as a last resort to protect themselves against tyranny in government." Elsewhere he wrote, "What country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms.”

Thomas Cooley confirmed that these were the Founding Father's intentions, "The right declared [in the Second Amendment] was meant to be a strong moral check against the usurpation and arbitrary power of rulers, and as a necessary and efficient means of regaining rights when temporarily overturned by usurpation."- Principles of Constitutional Law 270 (1880)

If Americans are to have a chance in standing against future oppressions of the federal government, backed by the gargantuan army of the United States (currently almost one million active duty troops stationed in the contiguous 48 states alone), it is imperative that the people be well trained and well armed. Do not doubt that the government is willing to use brutal force, or that they will use sophisticated, powerful, and deathly weaponry. As an American citizen, each individual has the right to own and use any weapon that may be used by the armed forces, or any weapon of similar purpose and magnitude.

"Their swords and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birth-right of an American ... The unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or the state governments, but where I trust in God it will ever remain, in the hands of the People." – Tench Coxe, The Pennsylvania Gazette, Feb. 20, 1788. (emphasis mine)

Todd, I used the Nazis as my main reference merely because I have been reading recently about anti-semitism in Germany before and through WWII and it was on my mind. I can easily believe that the Hitler quote is legend rather than historical fact, but the truth remains that gun registration and other controls were systematically used against the Jewish population in Nazi Germany, culminating in official disarmament.

As for Stalin, he is certainly one of history's most nefarious characters, and his record on gun control doesn't help. He admitted openly: "If the opposition disarms, well and good. If it refuses to disarm, we shall disarm it ourselves." -- J. V. Stalin, "Reply to the discussions on the Political Reports of the Central Committee," Dec 7, 1927. This he did, and many, many millions died as a result.

I believe that the most tragic effects of gun control can actually be seen in China, where untold numbers of civilians died as a result of weapons bans, first under the Nationalists and then under the Communists.
