GOP Strategists Plot to Ban Donald Trump From Debates

Jeb Bush, the former Florida governor; Mr. Walker; and Senator Marco Rubio of Florida — to band together and state that they would not participate in any debate in which Mr. Trump was present

Well, that tells us all that we need to know, and many of us have known for quite a while. The backroom anointed ones, fully sold out...

All that's gonna do is get even more people behind Trump, and that'll be his excuse to run third party and get Hillary elected. Idiots. Why bring even more attention to him by doing this?

They really want to destroy the party. Wackjobs.

So I guess Trump isn't lying, when he said he can't be bought...

Fox News will keep Trump in the debates because it will bring more viewers than they've had all year.

Fox News has, by far, the best rating of any cable news channel.

If anyone needs viewers, it's CNN and MSNBC.

People don't understand that there are a large swath of Republican voters that are detached from the news that we political junkies delight in. They pop in every 2 or 4 years to vote and do nothing else. So you could understand why the Republican power brokers are absolutely terrified of Trump airing out the big 3's dirty laundry on national television.

My thought, exactly. In-fact I may have to vote for Trump as a f'k you moment to Bush, Walker and Rubio. I don't want to see their arses in the debate anyway.. Let those three neocons stay home.

Because Trump won't go to war for Israel.

so is trump for real or is this all just part of the play? I wouldn't mind watching Trump make fun of the other candidates for 2 hours if he's on the stage alone, whatever.

If Rand has the same support as his dad the republicans aren't winning anyway. We totally spoiled the republican vote the last 2 elections and it will happen again if another asshat is the GOP nominee.

Nobody knows. But the people who support him are real. This has gotten much bigger than Trump. I've talked to democrats who would vote for him. The entire political atmosphere is virulently anti-politician. Obama has sowed some nasty seeds.

Bush, Rubio, and Walker sitting out the debate to free up airtime (and thus votes) for Trump, Paul, and the other candidates? Too good to be true. I'll believe it when I see it. I suppose that those three could then have their own debates, which could really work out well for them if the public accepts them as being the real debates. I think that the risk of the plan not working is too high for them.

b...b...but I thought Scott Walker was a fighter who wins? You mean he's afraid of the big bad Trump? Some fighter.

The article reads like it's the candidates who are suggesting this idea, but it's the "donors and operatives", who may or may not be affiliated with a campaign. It doesn't seem to be a popular idea among the campaigns.

Many national Republican officials are increasingly resigned to Mr. Trump’s looming presence. At a meeting of the Republican Governors Association this week in Aspen, Colo., donors and operatives mused about how to prevent him from hijacking the debate.

One idea that came up was to urge three leading candidates — Jeb Bush, the former Florida governor; Mr. Walker; and Senator Marco Rubio of Florida — to band together and state that they would not participate in any debate in which Mr. Trump was present, using his refusal to rule out a third-party bid as a pretext for taking such a hard line. The thinking, according to a Republican involved in the conversations, was that the lesser-funded prospects who have been eclipsed by Mr. Trump would follow suit, and the TV networks airing the debates would be forced to bar Mr. Trump in order to have a full complement of candidates.

But none of the campaigns have shown any appetite for such solidarity, for reasons ranging from their strategic interests and not wanting to make Mr. Trump a martyr, to fear of making an enemy of Fox News, the preferred cable network of conservatives and the host of the first debate
