Gold Plated Tungsten Bars

Ron Paul should see this and demand a audit of Fort Knox.... Anybody know how to get this to RP

The rumors about gold plated tungsten have been around for a long time.

Please tell me this wouldn't happen with gold eagles or any gold coins from the US Mint. I'm hoping this isn't economical to do for smaller quantities of gold.

coins

It would be almost impossible to create in tungsten the detailed engravings on coins. You can't stamp it and I think making detailed castings would be nearly impossible. So you couldn't just create a tungsten "eagle" and then gold plate it. The only way I can imagine it being done would be to cast a thin tungsten plate in the middle of the gold blank. So only part of the gold would be replaced with tungsten. Just making the blank would be difficult and I'm still not sure you would be able to stamp it properly in the die with the extremely hard tungsten in the middle.

And the end result would be detectable by various means, some of which probably would not cost much. You could, for example, have a machine that very slightly bends the coin and then bends it back. This would instantly alert to the presence of a tungsten core and would not harm the gold in the slightest. There are probably even easier ways using electrical resistance of sonic properties.

I know I read about them a while back but this seems to be a little more specific than just a rumor...

I agree with Acala if there were fakes out there we would know about it. I have heard nothing on Eagles but as the price goes up fakes will happen. 1980 saw a bunch of fake silver 100 oz bars as the price rose to 50 - they drilled them out and filled them with other metal. It was very easy to tell if you handled a lot of Silver by just tapping it to get it to ring. Silver has a tone that is very distinctive.

Lots of speculation and "quotations" in that piece. I have never seen any proof that there were actually any tungsten gold bars. Tungsten may be similar to gold in its density, but there are enough differences that you could tell in a gold bar.

As far as the properties of tungsten versus gold, they are similar. But there are important differences, per the Ron Paul blog at dailypaul.com. In coins, there is a difference in the ring. The speed of sound thru tungsten is different from that with gold (as is detectible with a cheap ultrasound scanner). Tungsten is very hard and brittle (with a higher melting point) while gold is soft and pliable (on a hardness scale, it is alleged that talc at 1 means gold at 2.5, tungsten at 7.5 and diamonds at 10.0).

The atomic weight of gold is said to be 196.96 versus 183.86 for tungsten. Gold allegedly has a specific gravity of 19.32 and tungsten of 19.25. Precision measuring and weighing devices (which are now available all over the world) could measure a bar and easily calculate its exact volume and weight for either gold or for tungsten. These devices would immediately detect tungsten bars in contrast to gold bars.

Zippy right on time to poopoo the CONFIRMED tungsten bars. You've been very busy playing whack-a-mole here lately.

If one is taking large institutional delivery of TONS (millions of oz), I expect they believe they have real gold and wouldn't go through all the tests to determine if each bar is indeed real. Chinese took that step and discovered that there's *gasp and surprise* fraud in the metals markets. Who would have guessed? The physical differences are so minor that one has to do sound wave tests and drill tests to determine a tungsten bar from a pure gold bar.

Here's a write-up, with german news video, about some of the fakes found

But not casually if the job is done well, and that in itself presents serious potential problems.

What baffles me is the following:

Silver dollars are still legal US currency. Yet I continue to see fake chinese silver dollars being offered on Ebay. So actually these are counterfeits, even if the ads claim that 'Copy' is stamped on them. Thats like you print fake dollar bills and just put a small 'copy' notice somewhere on the bill to make it OK. When I called the local Secret Service office and told this to an agent he sounded like he had never heard of this. Outcome: Zero! Guess the government doesn't want to disrupt our China relations.

count - link to an example?
