Going barefoot: healthy and natural or stupid and juvenile?

Personally, I love going barefoot. Shoes are difficult to wash, make my feet stink, and are just plain uncomfortable. Even flip-flops and such have annoying straps that give you blisters and make it kind of awkward to walk or run. I've read articles about how going barefoot can help you walk with natural gait (landing on the ball of the foot and then having the heel touch down instead of walking heel-toe) which reduces impact on the knees and ankles. I've even found by myself that after going barefoot for a large amount of time, when I walk with shoes on again my knees ache a little bit.

Obviously, shoes are a useful tool and one can't go barefoot everywhere; there are hazardous situations where shoes are called for, but why do a lot of people have a problem with people going outside sans footwear? I'd even go so far as to question why businesses have a problem with bare feet. In reality, one's feet are no dirtier than their or someone else's shoes. A lot of businesses do it for liability, which is totally understandable, but some people still have some kind social problem with it.

What are your views on this trivial diversion?

Goldcoast, Australia. Beach towns in oz... barefoot to the shops, generally no worries. lol

Australians are so uncivilized.

Says the seppo. And if by "uncivilized" you mean, "laid back"? Sure.. :p

Getting sand in your shoes constantly seems pretty stupid / idiotic to me..

I wear shoes everywhere I'm not comfortable, kind of like "non-essential" layers of clothes.

No shoes for the most part around the house, I wear flip flops or sandals if I go out of the house. Rarely wear tennis shoes, and HATED working in an office because Id have to wear dress shoes which really caused me to have major foot problems at the time. I dont like my feet to be enclosed and I think its unhealthy for your feet anyways. Bad part about going barefoot is the bottoms of my feet require constant care. I have to go get the pedicure from time to time, and I pumice stone my feet daily so they don't look rough.

Ok, I looked up "roof stomp" on Urban Dictionary and nothing turned up.

What is this colloquialism?

A tradition fighter pilots did in the middle of the night to the guys that did not go out and party with the boyz. We would get up on their roof and stomp loudly until they let us in. Usually done to a higher ranking officers (many times with a family that was not amused).

They had to provide free booze to us drunkards. :D

What a misfortune that I don't drink (and that I'm 16). Sounds like a lot of fun!

I hate shoes. But I don't feel going barefoot in public is appropriate. It seems not juvenile but trashy.
