For libertarians, it’s the dream ticket that will probably never be.

Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, who’s been carefully teasing clues about a possible 2012 run for president, told reporters Saturday that there’s no way he could ever run with Texas Rep. Ron Paul, also a possible presidential contender. It’s nothing against Ron Paul — they agree on most issues — it’s because the ticket wouldn’t have the diversity needed to pull in enough votes to win, Johnson said.

“I don’t see it as a political reality at all,” Johnson said when asked if America would ever see a Paul-Johnson ticket on their presidential ballot. “In my opinion, the reality has to be a bigger Republican Party, a bigger Republican base that includes everybody.”

You'd think he would be honored to run with Dr. Paul. I used to like Johnson. I feel different about him now.

He is letting stuff get to his head, which has gotten bigger lately.

Yet, the reality 95% of Americans have no idea who he is.

He is trying to play the game...let him be.

He's not playing it right.

Rand played the game and now he is almost single-handedly setting the dialogue in Washington. Rand started out by being the #1 enemy of statists everywhere.

Gary is doing none of this.

Why would *anyone* talk about being the VP at this point, when they are obviously putting out feelers for a run of their own? It's admitting defeat before you even get started. Paul/Johnson is not a political reality at this time because A) Paul is not the nominee, B) Johnson still seems like he wants to run, and C) VPs aren't chosen this early in the game (you know, before the game even gets officially started).

In his big-ego head, I believe that he is thinking it's a Johnson/Paul run, as if "Why would I want Paul to run with me, ewww!"

The thing is, to win, they can't run two candidates that are so similar. They need to diversify it enough to draw voters that wouldn't vote for one to vote for the other. You can not win the election focusing on such a small, narrow slice of the voter pie. I think they actually tend to have a subtractive effect on each other. I would vote for Ron Paul in a heartbeat, but Gary Johnson I would have to think long and hard about.

What is wrong with this guy?

Why? What's wrong with stating the obvious?

A Paul/Johnson or Johnson/Paul ticket will not happen, because you need to have somebody who appeals to traditional conservatives in the VP position, at least rhetorically. Maybe Walter Williams. But neither Paul nor Johnson can be a VP of the other. What's wrong with acknowledging that?

He is letting stuff get to his head, which has gotten bigger lately.

Let's see. This is what Gary Johnson said:

How is calmly acknowledging reality "letting stuff get to his head"?

I want Paul to run, I am not even enthusiastic about Johnson, but the ridiculous and undeserved bashing he is getting should stop.

Do you really think the traditional conservative would vote for any of the candidates the Democrats will put forward over Paul?

There is such a thing as simply not showing up. That's what you'll get from many religious Republicans with a Paul/Johnson or Johnson/Paul ticket. The dems will be sure to scare the heck out of them about wanting to "legalize marijuana" (Johnson) or wanting to "pardon every single non-violent drug prisoner" (Ron Paul). They will not even have the candidates say a word, just scare mail from third parties. To not lose his base, Obama could simply just say he is looking forward to give the issue lower enforcement priority or something like that.

The only way it could work is if usual non-voters who are young decide to vote for the Republican ticket en masse, enough to make up for the religious voters not showing up. But why just not pick someone like Walter Williams, or a non-cheating Mark Sanford?
