Former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson is launching his own Super PAC, aiming to promote “Liberty-minded” candidates throughout the country.
The PAC is called Our America PAC.
Johnson, who served two terms as New Mexico’s governor, was the Libertarian Party candidate for President in 2012.
“From the realities of government-run healthcare setting in to the continuing disclosures of the breadth of NSA’s domestic spying, more Americans than ever are ready to take a serious look at candidates who offer real alternatives to business-as-usual,” the release announcing the PAC said.
The PAC will make independent expenditures to aid the libertarian-leaning candidates.
“Turning this widespread agreement with the Liberty movement, though, requires success at the ballot box,” the release says. “It requires making sure that candidates who support a Liberty agenda have the support to compete with the establishment candidates on the airwaves, on the Internet and on the ground. Voters are ready to support such candidates, if only they have the opportunity to hear from them and learn what they believe.”
Steve Terrell of the Santa Fe New Mexican outlined some of the advantages and, of course, difficulties that Johnson’s new PAC will face:
There are things for both Democrats and Republicans to love — and hate — about the issues Johnson is pushing. Liberals can love the libertarian stances on marriage equality, legalizing marijuana and downsizing the military, while conservatives can embrace significant cuts to government spending, repealing Obamacare and opposition to gun control.
The trick, of course, is finding those who want both gay marriage and big cuts to government programs, drug legalization and no gun control, etc.
In New Mexico, Senate candidate David Clements, a Republican, is running as a Liberty-minded candidate.

He even posted a picture of himself and Johnson on his Facebook page. The picture was taken at an Our America Initiative event last month.
The PAC is separate from the Our America Initiative, a non-profit for which Johnson is the honorary chairman. That is an issue advocacy group that does not get directly involved in races between candidates.
