Have this one used game that looks fun (Homefront - like Red Dawn but with N. Korea invading) and while you are supposed to be able to play it offline, you have to log in and register once to be able to do that. Steam was giving a "Not connected to the Internet" error for a while (this is a REALLY COMMON PROBLEM!) It apparently tries to open a ton of ports and if any of them are blocked - well no go. Now it's saying it's trying to update the software, but can't connect to the Internet. :(

Solutions vary from uninstall and re-install, to shutting down all your firewalls and security/anti-virus software (like that's going to happen - NOT!), etc.

anyway, has anyone run into this and found a solution?

thanks,

Shut down your system. Shut down both router then modem. Reboot router first once the router is rebooted than boot modem up.

Once both are booted in that order, start up your system.

If other computers share the internet, it is advised to shut them down before you start your rebooting process.

Hope that helps.

(Beware..Steam has an "F" rating with the better business bureau. It works best when you keep games in the firewall, but not the Steam application itself). Remove steam from your firewall exceptions list.

Never put Steam on any exceptions list, always allow it to be scanned for virus or malware. It's just an application DON'T Trust it.
Always keep your malware and anti-virus running.

You can add the game folder to exceptions list for active scans, but keep your on demand scans intact. Meaning when you do a manual scan of your system even the game folders will be scanned.

Haven't tried Steam, only play WoW on windoze.

That said.. sounds like a Firewall issue. Either windoze or your router.

this problem will also occur for people with poor internet connections or satellite connection.
