Liberty Forum opens in Manchester

MANCHESTER — Liberty lovers will hold sway in downtown Manchester this weekend, when the Free State Project holds its annual Liberty Forum, offering four days of activities, lectures and workshops on just about any topic involving freedom.

The forum, which started Thursday afternoon, runs through Sunday and is expected to draw 500 to 600 people to the Center of New Hampshire/Radisson Hotel. The expected highlight is Saturday morning, when National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden will speak live from Russia via video-conferencing at 11 a.m.

“It was a process, and we’re really excited we finally got him,” said Carla Gericke, president of the Free State Project.

This is the ninth year that the Free State Project has put on the event.

Dozens of speakers are lined up. They include Cian Westmoreland, a former U.S. airman turned peace activist; Bella Robinson, a one-time prostitute who advocates for the decriminalization of prostitution; Lyn Ulbricht, the mother of Ross Ulbricht, the imprisoned creator of the illegal drug-marketing website Silk Road; and Jason Sorens, who teaches at Dartmouth College and initiated the Free State movement.

The full Snowden address has been posted in a separate thread:

There was some controversy over the videotaping of the Snowden address which resulted in some more media coverage:

Also, below is a video reporting on the event from Amanda Billyrock. I was wondering what happened to her as I noticed her previous channel has been deleted from youtube, but good to see she is still involved with the Free State Project.

On the TV show, The A-Team--one of the few shows that was broadcast on state-controlled South African television in the 1980s--John “Hannibal” Smith used to say: “I love it when a plan comes together.”

And, boy, did it come together this past weekend at the Free State Project’s 9th annual Liberty Forum, held February 18-21, 2016 at the Radisson Hotel in downtown Manchester, NH.

I always say, “It takes a Quillage,” and it really does! Most of the people who worked on bringing you the best Liberty Forum yet, volunteered their time. Hours and hours, week over week, month over month. They are the true stars of the event.

Says Angela Harris, lead organizer with husband Emmett:

“WOW, what a weekend! If you had told me a year ago that Emmett and I would be organizing the next Liberty Forum, and that not only would we have Edward Snowden as our keynote speaker, but that we would have already Triggered the Move weeks before, I would have told you were crazy – optimistic and cute, but crazy.”

Not crazy, but planned. At Liberty Forum 2013, the last one organized by Chris Lawless, when I announced my desire to Trigger the Move earlier than the projected date of 2018, I knew we were going to outgrow the Crowne Plaza in Nashua. I knew I wanted to move the event to Manchester, the Granite state’s largest city where the most Free Staters live. Under Liam L, in 2014, we held our last Liberty Forum at the Crowne where we hosted Snowden's then-attorney Jesselyn Radack and NSA whistleblower Thomas Drake, and in 2015, under the steady hand of Merav Yaakov, we moved to New Hampshire’s largest conference center at the Radisson Hotel in Manchester.

This year, we had a record-breaking 600+ people in attendance. The Snowden interview, conducted by Nick Gillespie of Reason TV, was mentioned in more than 200 media outlets, including CNN, The New York Times, ABC News, Fox News, and Salon.
