Friend the Pope on Facebook and earn "Time off Purgatory"

Wait, this isn't an Onion article?

Nope. All you have to do is follow these holy tweets and bada bing...Papal court handlles the pardons for sins. Whoda thunkit?

I think it starts next week or something though so maybe want to catch the early bird and bookmark the Popes tweeter thingamabob. If it's that easy methinks maybe we'll break the internet with all of that traffic. Ought to be a hoot.

And the title of this is very misleading:

In its decree, the penitentiary said that getting an indulgence would hinge on the beneficiary having previously confessed and being "truly penitent and contrite".

Praying while following events in Rio online would need to be carried out with "requisite devotion"

The church's granted indulgences reduce the time Catholics believe they will have to spend in purgatory after they have confessed and been absolved of their sins.

But a senior Vatican official warned web-surfing Catholics that indulgences still required a dose of old-fashioned faith, and that paradise was not just a few mouse clicks away.

There is no 'outer perimeter' of Hell. There is no being partly in Hell. If you die with unrepentant mortal sin you go straight to Hell.

Well. Personally I'm of the opinion that everyone gets a theoretical "pass" in the end (which really isn't an end to anything).

Besides...I thought they said purgatory didn't really exist a few years back. No? They didn't say that?

Ugh. What a shameful course your thinking takes when it leaves the Christian faith as preached by Jesus and the apostles. And then you have people like Eduardo who actually try to defend it. Its hard to even take seriously that people believe this garbage...let alone try and defend it....

Well. I don't know, S_F. Is important to stimulate such discussion. This was a great paper to do so too. Is interesting, the fact that twitter traffic is there in the mix with the revelations.

Eduardo,

This is the religion forum and I am not going to be "respectful" of unbiblical lies. Why don't you grow some balls and try to defend this garbage...any way possible...from the Scriptures. If you dont at least attempt to do that, I wont have respect for you no matter what.

I've tried debating things with you, but as many other on this forum know, you are the most intellectually dishonest debater and there really is no point in discussing anything with you.

But if you're really interested here, read this: http://socrates58.blogspot.mx/2008/02/biblical-evidence-for-purgatory.html

I know the accusation is thrown around, but unless you provide evidence of it, it sounds to me that this is just an easy way to get out of a debate. Where are indulgences in the Scriptures?

All the main ideas upon which an indulgence is based are found in the Bible: the Church's power to bind and loose, vicarious atonement among members of the Church, and penance. Although the doctrine has developed, like all others, it is not unbiblical in the least. In fact, St. Paul himself issued an indulgence by lessening the temporal penance for sin of a straying brother (2 Cor 2:6-11), which he had previously imposed on him (1 Cor 5:3-5). The Catholic Church adds no more in essence to the practices and theological presuppositions of these two passages.

Eduardo, the Pope offering indulgences for following on Twitter? Really? You don't see a problem with that?

What's the name of the religion started by this man?

Heck, I don't know, TER. I don't think he started a Religion. I'm not much of a follower of people worshiping even if he did try something like that. I'll tell you what though, he nails it here as far as becoming close to my own view on man's connection to the cosmos.

Cripes, that's like saying you're defining liberty itself off of Ron Paul. Sure, he's got great ideas but he's still just a regular joe in the end. Hopefully that makes sense. Not busting Ron's stones but was the closest I could think of to explain the scenario off the top of my noggin right this second.

TER, I would have expected you to have read a bit more into this than just going off the headline. No, you are not granted an indulgence just for following the Pope on Twitter.

From the article:

Mindful of the faithful who cannot afford to fly to Brazil, the Vatican's sacred apostolic penitentiary, a court which handles the forgiveness of sins, has also extended the privilege to those following the "rites and pious exercises" of the event on television, radio and through social media.

In its decree, the penitentiary said that getting an indulgence would hinge on the beneficiary having previously confessed and being "truly penitent and contrite".

Praying while following events in Rio online would need to be carried out with "requisite devotion", it suggested.

Of course the mainstream secular media leads off with a headline saying you can get an indulgence for following the Pope on Twitter, so it doesn't surprise me that a left-wing newspaper plays that part up while burying the actual actions needed for an indulgence.
