fret buzz problems

I've been tinkering with my hot-rodded strat, and have made more progress. However, the first fret (high E) buzzes so much that the note doesn't sound. Anyone know how to fix this?

on my acoustic I had to shim the string holder upper and use a med-heavy gauge string...I usually sound better with a little buzz

all i can think of is the standard checks. make sure neck tension is set properly, make sure the neck isnt warped, make sure the frets are all the same height...etc...

if all other frets sound good and the rest checks out, either raise the nut by putting in some glue with bone shavings (or plastic) into the high E string rest slot, or file down the fret until it rings true.

again if all other notes on the other frets sound good on that string ...id file down the fret myself. sometimes they move and raise up and get loose. tap it down or file it id say.

edit: i have my first fret set to .01 clearance. i think the neck relief at the 12th fret isnt much more than that either. just a good check.

Your high E string buzzes on the first fret when the string is played open? Or when you play an F on the E string?

Probably that damn scalloped fretboard you decided to use. :D

I wouldn't think it needs a truss rod adjustment to fix a first fret buzz. I would check the fret first, then check the nut and raise it. If that doesn't help, I'd raise the bridge saddle on the E string a bit. Raising the bridge saddle might throw your intonation out a little...you might have to retune it.

There are a few things you can try.

1. YOu can raise the bridge to eliminate the buzz.

2. If the buzz continues, then you can try to adjust the truss Rod to get ride of the buzz.

Try the bridge before the truss rod.

truss rod adjustment, and bridge adjustment. First try the truss rod adjustment which changes the curvature of the neck, it must be slightly bowed when looking down the neck of the guitar. Once you have a slight bow going(adjust by 1/8 or 1/4 turn) then adjust the bridge for lower or higher action..in this case you probably want a slightly higher action.

if u adjust the truss rod. do it slow over the course of a few days. no more than 1/4 turn per day. at least this was what i was taught.
