If Iran is attacked they only have to sink ships carrying crude oil to shut down the Strait of Hormuz -- they would be foolish to attack the US and/or other military ships. They have mobile Exocet missiles to do the job. They could keep the water way closed and demand the world compensate them for any damages caused by any attack on their country. The cost to the Western economies will be enormous -- it could result in a world-wide financial disaster.
No. Here's a list of seventy two ships that were successfully engaged and damaged/destroyed using rockets, missiles, mines, and gunnery in the opening of the Persian Gulf tanker war (list ending in December 1985):

Despite dire predictions of highly touted experts as well as arm chair generals, I think we can safely conclude that civilization did not end, the world economy did not collapse, and WW3 did not occur. Sinking tankers in the PG is highly overrated as a military strategy. It is also a piss-poor foreign policy for regional powers. Russia's oil exports are several times over that of Iran. They are perfectly happy to see oil prices rise. They amass wealth, it give their pipelines power over their neighbors (former satellites) in Eastern Europe, and drags on the economy of their continental rival in Asia: China.
