Are there any homesteader or off the grid people who frequent this forum. How do you guys deal with property taxes? Do you have a job or do little things around town to make some cash to at least pay your property taxes? Do you have investments that generate income?

Do you guys think there will be a time in our lifetime that will allow us to truly own our property without having to pay property taxes? Were there property taxes when our country first came about?

Thanks for any answers. Just trying to make a conversation about question I was thinking about to myself. Cheers!

Property Tax is a Fraud, exposing it and winning against it is an entirely different story.

It will depend where you live. In Texas, property taxes are very high which "makes up" some for not having a state income tax, but this makes it very hard to homestead. Ones best bet however is to get agriculture exemptions which can heavily reduce the taxes... so look into possible exemptions in your state. What state are you from, btw?

Fighting to end property taxes is one of the most important state issues there is, IMO. We certainly didn't start off with them.

Thanks for your reply, Bryan. I live in Tennessee, but I won't be able to afford what I want for a long time. I do not plan on leaving Tennessee, as it is where I am from originally and generally like the state. Are there any candidates other than maybe 3rd party candidates that even take issue with this nationwide?

I agree. In Texas, and I assume many other states, property tax levels vary throughout the state. They are pretty low where I am compared to most places, but as long as they exist we don't have true land ownership.

I should note, what we seek does exist within the state in the form of allodial title. This is what we should be fighting for.

I heard the property tax exemption passed for 100% disabled veterans in MS. That seems to be the easiest way to avoid property taxes in you want to own a lot of land. http://www.clarionledger.com/story/...s-mississippi-department-of-revenue/19491479/

Another known option is to live in the sticks of AK or NH where property taxes, personal income taxes and sales taxes don't exist. Since almost no one does that, it is clearly a very unpopular position.

The more realistic ways are to produce stuff on your land and sell it or have renters live with you. Their rents should more than cover your taxes.

What I've done is not own land or a house. Instead, I live with someone else. I have very low rent and likely, none of the rent I pay is actually goes to property taxes. There is a river in front of the home. Out back there is 100+ forested acres, a large field and a stream. So I can hunt, fish, hike, snowshoe, atv and so on as much as I want.

In my metropolitan area, senior citizens do not have to pay property taxes.

Just buy where taxes are low. If you are smart about it, they will only be a couple hundred a year. If you can't swing a couple hundred for taxes, I think you might have bigger problems.

Mine are $800, but Maine gives a homestead discount to full time residents so I only pay $600.

I know some are adverse to any tax, but I feel like I get my $600 worth, roads are always plowed quickly, the town has some nice parks and a pool we use.

Another property I wanted to buy here in town had $2400 taxes, which didn't seem worth it to me.

That's not the point.

The tax could be $1.

The point is that, as long as there is a tax hanging over your head every year, you never truly own your home.

You're just a serf, renting your land from the feudal lord.

Try not paying it, and you'll find out, eventually, who really owns you.

Sadly this is true.... taxation = theft.

Some states actually have allodial title built into their Constitutions (Minnesota is an example of this).... but there is no rule of law in the US

Maybe for some of you. I feel I get services I value for my taxes.

Plowed roads? Road usage tax/gas tax. Parks and pools? User fees. Why do you feel that another individuals property should be taxed for your personal convenience and recreation?

Not my problem. I feel I get services that I value for what I pay. If they don't that's their issue not mine.

Maybe you feel like you get what you pay for, but many people don't. Not to mention, YOU DO NOT OWN YOUR LAND. That's the big problem. As long as you have to pay to keep ownership; it is not yours not matter how you want to spin it. You have almost 8 thousand posts and don't get it, yet?

Then the government can charge people for what they use on a per-use basis. I'm not suggesting that's completely ideal (considering how government got its land and so forth) but nothing is perfect in this world. This would be a huge step in the right direction.

Good for you. But you don't understand the argument. No one is arguing if they get their money's worth for their taxes. The discussion is about who owns the land. And if you don't you pay your rent, you will see who owns the land, whether you think you get value for it or not.

We've green acre'ed here in TN which dropped the rate from $2500 to $1700. Must have 15+ acres.
