Frank Luntz very impressed with Rand announcement speech: "one of the most powerful I've seen"

Wow, not only at Luntz's words, but at the actual dials regarding party affiliation. Rand really did his homework on how to provide a balanced, nuanced yet heavily populist message and it is playing out nicely.

I wake up and scratch my luntz, then sit down and take a luntz in the toilet. Now Im ready to go. :D

I wasn't so much concerned with what Luntz was saying, though I agreed with his assessment, but the whole time I was thinking:

that little graph is pretty damn neat.

Can someone please educate me on the "dials"? Is that something real-time? How is it measured?

Frank Luntz is notorious for using "approval" dials. Each member of his audience has a dial that's springloaded to a neutral position. As people say things you agree or disagree with, you turn your dial in the corresponding direction (more turn has more impact), and the sum average of all the dial positions appears on the TV screen as a moving line (like a stock ticker) in real time as the discussion progresses.

The thing is, Frank always frames his discussions in such a way that he essentially controls what the dials do. He is a master of audience manipulation, has written books about it and brags about it all the time. If he wants it to look like the audience is in favor of attacking Iran, he will arrange for a question like "Is it right to stand idly by while Iran threatens poor defenseless Israel with destruction?" If he wants the audience to look like it's not in favor of attacking Iran, the question will be "Is it right to expend American lives and resources on a conflict that is clearly not ours?" And such nonsense. So the dials are complete bullshit. They say whatever Frank wants them to say.
