If you want to slim down, nutritionists and fitness experts will tell you to cut down on alcohol. It’s highly calorific and fattening.
But many of us are both health-conscious and like a drink, and the classic vodka-lime-soda is just, well, a bit boring.
Good news, then, that a study has found a link between tequila and weight loss.
According to research presented at a meeting of the American Chemical Society, everyone’s favourite party spirit can help lower your blood sugar too.
Specifically, it’s the sugars that naturally occur in the agave plant from which tequila is made.
These sugars are called agavins - which is not the same as agave syrup - and are non-digestible which means they act as a dietary fibre and won’t raise your blood sugar.
“Agavins are not expensive and they have no known side effects, except for those few people who cannot tolerate them,” said Dr Mercedes G. López.

She added that agavins, like other fructans, are the best sugars to help support growth of healthful microbes in the mouth and intestines.
What’s more, agavins can help people feel fuller and thus eat less.
Dr López explained that agavins are better than artificial sweeteners which are absorbed by the body and can cause side effects, like headaches.
However agavins don’t taste as sweet as their artificial counterparts.
To reach their conclusions, the researchers fed a group of mice a standard diet but added agavins to their water.
They found that the mice who were given agavins ate less, lost weight and their blood glucose levels decreased in comparison with other sweeteners such as glucose, fructose, sucrose, agave syrup and aspartame.
Whilst this probably shouldn’t be taken as the go-ahead to down tequila shots in an effort to lose weight, it might just be worth considering when choosing a drink next time you hit the bar.

They should've given them a few mouse sized shots and put them in a cage with the opposite sex. Those little mouse panties would've been hitting the sawdust within minutes.

Fermenting agave into tequila converts the sugars (including agavans) into alcohol. Tequila is not a good source. http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/rest...-obesity-diabetes-fighting-properties-6517842

Why Tequila Probably Doesn't Have Obesity, Diabetes Fighting Properties

Despite several news organizations reporting that a new study might show that tequila could actually help prevent diabetes and obesity, the leap from the agavins, the sugary compound in the agave plant, to tequila, which is distilled from agave, is actually too formidable to draw that conclusion. We know, we wanted it to be true too, but the facts are that the very preliminary study released by the American Chemical Society just doesn't show that the liquor is in any way good for you.

As Fox News reported, the study tested diet-induced obesity and diabetes on a group of mice who were also given agavins, the sugary chemical compound found in agave. Other mice in the study were given agave syrup, aspartame, glucose, fructose, and sucrose. Of the sugars, agavins helped control blood sugar levels and reduce weight in the mice better than the other options.

Agavins help combat diabetes and obesity due to the way that they are metabolized. The natural sugar acts as a dietary fiber in the bloodstream and do not raise blood sugar levels, leading some scientists to believe that it is a healthier alternative sweetener.

However, according to local nutrition expert Sharon Salomon, not only is the agavin content in agave distillates like tequila and mezcal nearly non-existent, the study itself is not yet conclusive to correlate to human diets.

"Agavin may some day be made into a sweetener or added to other products but this is not the type of research that should be reported because there's really nothing there yet," she says. "Unless you're a fat mouse being fed straight agavin!"

We'll hold out for the day when a study actually proves liquor is good for us -- other than maybe anecdotally in an emotional way.

I know you're not the creative type, but you must know that the most commonly consumed tequila beverage is a margarita, which is tequila, lime, water and sugar. It seems to me that one could substitute the sugar in the margarita with a sweetener that contains agavins, and add them back in, and still enjoy some tequila.

You do not consume things in order to lose weight. The whole thing is, consume less.

This does make some sense coming from the guy who built a pizza oven  but it is not totally correct

What you want to do is eat nutritious satiating foods, not a bunch of grains and carbs. If you reduce your carbs and eat healthy fats, you get less craving for food.

So ya, coconut and MCT oil for example help people lose weight according to studies.

Something from the food and beverage category, I think, not a stimulant. But that does work well with losing weight, apparently not that healthy though.
Dunno about that. My Health class teacher in the late 80s said they used to give em out like candy in the 60's and 70s and that they were great, "You'd lose weight and get your house clean at 4 in the morning."

Its national margarita day and somewhere, little mouse panties are going to be hitting the floor. Use protection where applicable.
