The Boston Tea Party is memorable for the tea that whent into the habor. On December 16 2007 Boston could wake up to it's river and harbor covered in floating Ron Paul Balloons.

We need to print up a massive amount of BIODEGRADABLE Ron Paul Balloons and release them into the river and harbor to create a press sensation!

Who on these boards is from the Boston RP meet-up? We need to get in touch with them and help them raise the funds needed for the balloons!

We could even release balloons into the rivers in our towns accross the nation, but Boston would make the biggest impact.

That sounds crazy, and in a good way.. just a few thousands of those suckers... man.. that would be nuts..

But alas I don't live near boston...

Amazing idea. I know people were wanting to throw something in, but were having problems deciding what would be environmentally-friendly. That sounds like a good idea to me.

(nowhere near Boston, but I'd help for a chipin or something)

That would be awesome. And we should extend it beyond the Harbor. For instance, I (and I'm sure many others here) live very near the Mississippi.

I REALLY hate to bring this up but, here goes:

even biodegradable balloons may take years to complete break down and the enviro-folks will go CRAZY if just one single fish might be harmed by swallowing a bit of one of these balloons. Also, these folks are VERY well funded and we don't want to be accused of being uncaring about the environment.

Just my .02 worth...

Carry on...

My idea wasnt balloons but a whole crap ton of monopoly money with "federal reserve note" written on them (or could just be colored paper i suppose). Monopoly money would have a greater effect I think

I like everyone's ideas, tea, balloons, fake money, etc.

But face it guys ANYTHING we throw in the water is going to make some people go crazy!

We need to do this!

It won't be without risk. yes it might be illegal, but almost everything thing is already anyway. Yes, it could raise some flack from those concerned about the fish, but the balloons will not harm the environment in my opinion. If it takes a few years for them to completely break down they will do that out at sea and i don't think it would be a REAL threat to the environment.

However,

We could fill the balloons with helium attach them to a ship in the habor, stage a very theatrical tea partesque scene where we take over the ship and in the process liberate thousands of the balloons into the air.

The press would EAT IT UP!!!

By George, I think you've got it!

I have never heard of anyone complaining about helium balloons being released (though I am sure it has happened) ....

"Biodegradible" anything still takes years to decay. I do not like this idea, it will generate bad press.

yes, have tons and tons of balloons, but have them no where near the water.

enforce this!

throw boxes of tea into the harbor tied to fish line...

when the party is over, just pull them out...

i like the heliom ballons idea also

The advantage of balloons over tea or monopoly money is that it is a much better visual because the balloons are colorful and take up a bunch of volume. It just makes a better photo-op. But in reality if you tried to dump balloons in the water they wouldn't simply fall in the water and sit there. They most likely would be blown away from the wind. Unless you put a small rock or something inside the balloon before you inflated it.

But of course the bad press from it would be huge. I just don't think it is a good idea.

But there has to be something creative, we can do that doesn't damage property/environment. Come on everyone, brainstorm. We need to solve this dilemma. What about something like one of those batman search lights? Fire works? Skydivers?

I guess so far the balloon launch is the best Idea I have heard so far because it is a visual that can be seen by people elsewhere in the city even though they won't know right away what it was for. Balloon launches are rather commonplace at events such as college football games so why not us I guess. Still seems like an inconsiderate thing though just to release balloons and leave the mess for others far away to clean up your litter.

I'm just thinking out loud I guess. But I think we are on the right track but we just haven't found the perfect "thing" yet.

From a practical standpoint that would work perfect. But I just don't like the idea of reenacting the historical event. That is for historical societies to do. We are not protesting a tax on tea. We are having are own unique event and are simply giving a tip of the hat to the historical event. So whatever we do should be specific to us. It should be origional, not a historical recreation.

I'm am not a crunchy eco-freak by any stretch of the imagination, and I can tell you this is a terrible idea. Biodegradable plastic still takes years to degrade. But if you won't listen to those of us telling you this is a bad idea, perhaps this page will show you why balloons in the environment are a problem. It's not the fish we have to worry about. It's birds, sea turtles, and other animals that may swallow deflated balloons and die slowly of starvation after the balloon becomes entangled in their intestines.

Just google balloons and wildlife and you'll find several more examples like this one.
