Five ways drinking helps your health

by: Sandeep Godiyal

Without a doubt, many associate drinking with health concerns. After all, quite a number of medical conditions are triggered by excessive alcohol intake. It should be pointed out though, that drinking in moderation is best described as a beneficial habit. Indeed, experts have found that liquor intake could bring forth all sorts of health improvements. If you wish to learn about five of the most noteworthy perks of drinking, then you should read on.

An assortment of advantages

Dodging a heart attack Even though it's surprising, it is true that alcohol could protect you from the dangers of a heart attack. To explain, drinking either beer or wine tends to enhance the flow of blood throughout the arteries and blood vessels. This means that even if there are existing blockages on such regions of the cardiovascular system, a liquor drinker would still be able handle all kinds of physical activities without continuously worrying about sudden death.

Avoiding diabetes woes It should also be emphasized that drinking is among the finest means of lowering your chances of developing diabetes. Simply put, scientific experts conducted several experiments in which individuals were instructed to consume alcohol regularly. The result of such technical inquiries was quite straightforward: drinkers exhibited excellent insulin sensitivity and thus became less prone to developing the deadly disease than their non-drinking counterparts.

Protection from gallstones You would also be pleased to know that your favorite alcoholic beverages have the capability to hinder gallstone development. Interestingly, the mechanism through which such drinks prevent gallstone formation is easy to understand: the presence of alcohol in a person's body reduces the tendency of cholesterol to accumulate in the bile. It should be pointed out though, that alcohol would never be able to dissolve already-formed gallstones.

Evading a mental problem

It cannot be denied that alcoholic beverages excel in keeping the brain safe from stroke. With this in mind, it becomes clear why such drinks are considered excellent dementia preventers. After all, dementia is usually associated with brain damage. It should be emphasized nonetheless, that the dementia-preventing potential of beer and wine could also be associated with their social nature. Indeed, those who drink often do so with the company of other people.

Escaping kidney concerns

Scientific experts have also determined that alcoholic beverages shine in terms of their calcium-regulating capabilities. In this sense, it is no longer surprising as to why such drinks are considered superb barriers to kidney stone formation. Aside from limiting the accumulation of calcium, however, such popular refreshments are also unparalleled as a diuretic. This essentially means that the kidneys are continuously emptied of toxins and other harmful substances.

Something to remember

As made clear, alcohol is synonymous with advantages. You should never forget though, that perks only come with moderate drinking, which in turn means that you should only enjoy a maximum of two servings each day. Of course, you might wonder as to what would happen if you would overlook such a warning. Well, it would be best to point out that at high amounts, alcohol corrodes and damages organs. Overall, it would be appropriate to say that moderate drinking brings forth health while excessive drinking guarantees an untimely death.

Uh-oh. Government funded studies say moderate alcohol intake is good for you. I wonder if there's a conspiracy between corn producers, distillers, the government and the scientific/medical community. I mean, if they claim that small amounts of fluoride have health benefits and they claim the same for alcohol, it must mean its a giant conspiracy!

But some studies described in this section suggest that individuals who abstain from using alcohol also may be at greater risk for a variety of conditions or outcomes, particularly coronary heart disease, than persons who consume small to moderate amounts of alcohol.

Moderate alcohol consumption may provide some health benefits. It may:

Reduce your risk of developing heart disease
Reduce your risk of dying of a heart attack
Possibly reduce your risk of strokes, particularly ischemic strokes
Lower your risk of gallstones
Possibly reduce your risk of diabetes

Recent studies have suggested that low levels of alcohol consumption may slightly reduce the risk of some cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. The body of evidence suggests that most of the potential cardiovascular benefit of alcohol may be achieved by drinking within the levels recommended in Guideline 1.

Alcohol may have beneficial effects when consumed in moderation. The lowest all-cause mortality occurs at an intake of one to two drinks per day. The lowest coronary heart disease mortality also occurs at an intake of one to two drinks per day.

How can you trust all these government-funded studies, donnay?!?!,

You listen to what government says? Wow it's true, fluoride does dumb people down. :p

Moderate amounts of alcohol are good for almost all adults. However, 2 beers for an average adult male is not very much. Even 4 drinks, as long as it was only a couple nights a week would still be moderate. Anyway, yes. A large study shows that people who consume moderate amounts of alcohol live the longest. People that consume large amounts of alcohol live the next longest. People that consume no alcohol live the least longest.

Evidently you do, since you're parroting the same pro-alcohol stance government agencies and government-funded studies claim.

How can you trust the government when they say alcohol has positive health effects in moderation, but flat out reject scientific evidence about fluoride's benefits?

Are you serious? You disagree that small amounts of alcohol are healthy? Why else would it be untaxed in New Hampshire?

No, I completely agree with all the government funded studies which prove that alcohol in moderation has health benefits.

I'm just exposing donnay's inconsistency when she claims she doesn't trust any study funded with government money and that they are all lies.

Why else would it be untaxed in New Hampshire?

NH doesn't have a separate alcohol tax because the state already has a monopoly on alcohol sales.

Just in time for government to recommend each state lower the blood alcohol levels from 0.08% to 0.05%. Checkpoints all over the country--in some states the officials want your blood. Because Government knows best! <s>

Can you quote her on that?

I'm guessing you're just putting words in her mouth and need to apologize again with your cat picture.

Seriously? Have you not read her posts over the past 6 years?

Just from this week:
You can post a million of those so-called scientific studies--they can all say, fluoride causes you to blow gold out of your arse. It makes no difference to me because I know most, if not all, are completely fraudulent. I know the players in this game and know their end game agenda.

Credible because YOU have been told this LIE all your life. Again, an industry that knew it was going to cost them billions to dispose of this toxic waste paid lots of scientists to do studies that helped them sell it to YOU, hook, line and sinker. And let's not forget the government alphabet soup groups that got money to be the enforcers of such wacko science. This is not only a conspiracy, it is crony capitalism at it's best!

Controlled studies paid for by an industry who pays graft to government agencies to approve something isn't really science.

NH is 1 of 18 alcohol control states but it certainly doesn't have a monopoly on alcohol sales. Alcohol is sold in what, 1000s of places in NH, even in the morning, even on Sunday morning. If you just mean liquor, and not liquor, wine and beer, there are 3 private liquor stores in NH.

Yes, you edited it after I posted you jackass.

And the quote you used is the opposite of the broad stroke you characterized her with.

I know most, if not all, are completely fraudulent

Most is the keyword that makes the difference between a crazy person and someone that knows our government is not always credible.

Stop painting people as loons when they are doing the best they can to collect information in a fucked up world.

Someone who wants to separate truth from lies does not ignore overwhelming evidence from thousands of scientists across all continents who come to the same conclusion. When it comes to fluoride, for example, donnay refuses to acknowledge any evidence when presented to her by me, zippyjuan, and others. She just likes to scaremonger with phrases like 'toxic waste' and copypastas from unscientific, biased sources.

I used to be anti-fluoridation, until I actually researched and saw the facts.

This thread has nothing to do with fluoridation. It's great that you think it was important to challenge her on fluoridation. I am glad you stood up for what you believed. However, since that thread has nothing to do with this, why are you bothering her? Let's follow the DowmsizeDC model and stick to 1 subject at a time.

Do you approve of the principle of people putting things in your water without your permission?

People overdose on it and are harmed. Google image search Fluorosis. (Which I just noticed shows up misspelled in Firefox.)
