IS this real life.. i thought the house went home and they would have to vote on the senate bill for the extension IF the senate somehow passes it??

The Senate voted to block legislation to reform the National Security Agency early Saturday morning, dramatically raising the likelihood that portions of the Patriot Act expire at the end of the month.
With the vote still taking place, 41 senators had voted against proceeding, enough to block the bill.

The Senate immediately began voting on a separate vote to begin debating a two-month extension of the Patriot Act after blocking the USA Freedom Act. The Patriot Act expires on June 1, and contains the provisions authorizing the NSA surveillance programs.

It is unclear if the two-month extension of the Patriot Act will have the 60 votes to prevail.

And I believe they are voting on cloture AGAIN ? Feinstein moved to suspend the rules and vote on "USA Freedom" the "reform" bill even though it didn't get 60 for cloture. Spounded ike Rubio objected and now they are voting on ... something?

Senate blocks House bill reforming NSA spy programs

The Senate voted 57-42 to block legislation to reform the National Security Agency early Saturday morning, dramatically raising the likelihood that portions of the Patriot Act expire at the end of the month.

The late vote to block the USA Freedom Act — approved by the House last week in a bipartisan 338-88 vote — was a defeat for civil libertarians who have fought for years to reform the NSA, and a victory for Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).

Sixty votes were needed to win on the procedural motion and proceed to the bill.

The Senate immediately began voting on a separate vote to begin debating a two-month extension of the Patriot Act after blocking the USA Freedom Act. The Patriot Act expires on June 1, and contains the provisions authorizing the NSA surveillance programs.

The vote came after Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), the libertarian presidential candidate and a staunch critic of the NSA, prevented the Senate from holding the cloture vote hours earlier.

Paul talked up the delay on Twitter, arguing that the bill of rights was more important than lost sleep.

The WTF is this part in bold below:
If the two-month measure does fail, GOP leaders have said they will explore an even shorter-term extension, in an attempt to keep the Patriot Act powers from running out.

Since the House has recessed for the month, however, it seems nearly certain that the provisions will expire for at least a short while after the clock strikes midnight on May 31 but before House lawmakers return the afternoon of June 1.

Some Senate lawmakers have indicated that House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) could covertly slip through a short-term extension while his chamber is out of town.

Leadership aides have attempted to shoot that option down, but it may be more attractive to Boehner and his team if it is the only way to keep the law alive long enough for the House to respond. House lawmakers would surely revolt if their leaders slipped an extension through without their blessing.

2-month Patriot un-sunset failed also. Mcconnell asks for unanimous consent to un-sunset for 1-week. Rand asks to speak. SpEAKING NOW.
