I got into it a little with a few rabid feminists today, in which they advocated for Equal Work for Equal Pay.
They said that it was a violation of their Liberty to be discriminated against by not being guaranteed equal wages to men.
I first attempted to point out the "myth" of the wage gap. They were unconvinced. Whatever...
So I explained the following concepts:
Positive Rights vs Negative Rights
Freedom of Association
Freedom of Contract
Property Rights
The parable from Jesus about the farmer, workers, and the wages.
The Free Market
Social Change versus Government Coercion
They were absolutely opposed to all of the above because:
It only works in theory. Since Men are in power, they desire to keep power, so they will never voluntarily treat people fairly. Then then went on to explain how MLK was only successful via government action.
I countered with removing the power of government to treat people unfairly, and I took the Goldwater Stance in the CRA.
To make a long argument short. I remained calm and explained principle, they got emotional and tried to shame me. How would you deal with someone who sees rights as a "group" thing instead of an "individual" thing?
