It didn't help Gene McCarthy in '68 when there was an actual war going on which was dependent upon actual conscription.

I'm currently no more afraid of my daughter being drafted and sent to the Middle East then I am of seeing it happen to my son. In fact, I'm quite sure if they started actually drafting, rather than just registering, then any war would come to an abrupt end. It is, after all, how we brough that <expletive deleted> Southeast Asian war to an end despite an American "Greatest Generation" culture flushed with World War II victory that accepted the premise that it was an individual's duty to sacrifice their life for their country ("America, Right or Wrong" was the rallying call of the "Silent Majority").

Gene McCarthy wanted to end the WAR in vietnma. draft was not mentioned. Nixon , Hatfield, Bush 41 (as Houston congressman)led the fight to end the draft, continue the war.. most people don't care if someone else fights the war, just not their kids
