Female DNA Found on Bomb in Boston
Investigators Unsure Whether Evidence Means a Woman Aided in the Attack; Russians Allege Suspect's Ties to Jihadists

Wall Street Journal
April 29, 2013

Investigators have found female DNA on at least one of the bombs used in the Boston Marathon attacks, though they haven't determined whose DNA it is or whether its presence means a woman helped the two brothers suspected in the bombings, according to U.S. officials briefed on the probe.

In another development, Russian officials revealed details about contacts between the older brother and suspected Islamist radicals in the Caucasus, including Internet exchanges that led to concerns by investigators that he was trying to join up with jihadist fighters.

Speaking Monday about the DNA discovery, the U.S. officials cautioned that there could be multiple explanations for why genetic material from someone other than the two bombing suspects—Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his younger brother, Dzhokhar—could have been found on remnants of the exploded devices. It could have come, for example, from a store clerk who handled materials used in the bombs or a stray hair that ended up in the bomb.

There were female victims weren't there? Presumably there is something special about this particular bomb fragment that it couldn't have just been brushed or bled on by some female at the scene?

We'll find out shortly once they find out who's DNA it is.

Could have contacted a female anywhere- from the factory where it was made to possibly a sales person they bought it from or contacting somebody at the race as it went off or a wife.

I'm sure there is victim's DNA all over it. I'd imagine it was on something it should not have been on, though. Multiple layers of duct tape, they peel layers back and find DNA, for example.

We'll have to wait and see how it unfolds. Wasn't there a woman detained? Two other men and a woman? (I never heard what happened with it, for all I know they were let go a while ago)

see Obamacare.

The only thing that makes it useful in court was it having one origin. If there a multiple sources it loses any credibility.

Stick that in your DNA database.

Here is a question no one seems to be asking, does the bomb have the brothers' DNA on it?

The only sure thing about this is that it rules out Janet Napolitano's involvement.

That makes great sense. And if they can find a passport of one of the hijackers from a vaporized plane, then anything is forensically possible or at least passable.

If I'm not mistaken, this was found on the roof of one of the buildings by someone other than law enforcement. I would think it is very unlikely that you will find any victim DNA on it.

I don't get it. Is this talking about one of the bombs that exploded?
