Fat Head

I tried the akins diet after several yrs of an unsuccessful low fat diet. I lived on steak, bacon, sausage, butter, mayonaise, ranch dressing, eggs, fish, chicken, pork, and every other high fat, no carb foods for 2 yrs. I was a lean, mean machine! About 2 yrs into this diet, I was required to get a physical exam for my job. After the results were mailed to me, I called them to interpret the results. My cholesteral levels were...and I quote... "that of a 10 yr old" and my blood pressure was 84/66 (or something like that). I've never been so healthy in my life.

I second this^^^. I have had excellent physical exams for years now. The government (predictably) has been wrong for 40+ years about fats and carbs. The government picks and chooses industries it wants to subsidize and promote...I NEVER trust the government for nutrition advice. The government is a compromised entity that lies so much they even convince themselves that it is true.

When I first went into ketosis, I literally had so much energy that I was only sleeping for 4 hours a night. I would wake up in the middle of the night and I would stay energized the entire day...it was almost surreal:)

Peeing on a stick to see if your in ketosis is fun stuff...lol! And yeah...those carb crash and burns don't happen on high fat diets. Another benefit is you actually look forward to climbing a freaking mountain instead of forcing oneself to exercise :D.

I just finished watching this movie. I've been eating whole wheat bread for over a year now. I was wondering if there are any breads that I could eat that wouldn't be bad for me. Im a big sandwich eater, and I really don't know if I can give that up.

You CAN give bread up. Remember that the more you eat of something, the more you will crave it. Your brain associates "hunger" with "whole wheat bread" because you've trained yourself to do it through the years. When you start eating meats, eggs, fish, nuts, avacados, etc., your body will start to crave those things when you get hungry.

I follow a very simple plan called the Anabolic Diet. It is 5 days of keeping carbs below 30 grams a day, and then 2 days of eating all the carbs I want.

So through the week, I am eating beef, chicken, turkey, shrimp, all kinds of fish, butter, eggs any way I want them, sausage, etc.

Then on the weekends I eat pasta, bagels, cereal, doughnuts, cake...basically any carb-filled food I want. And I STILL stay lean.

It is called "carb-cycling". It shocks your body into losing weight fast because you are constantly teetering on the edge of moving in and out of ketosis.

Really it sounds like this move is full of bullshit misinformation, but I'll have to check it out some other time.

Someone should tell him that diet sodas aren't healthy. I'd also like to hear what vegetarians have to say about what he said about how a vegetarian diet makes you weak and lose muscle. Im pretty sure that that is bullshit.

haha, well done movie --- I love how he points the blame at government for stupid policy. Bravo to that, and for having the guy from Reason.com in there.

Finally watched it. Good movie. He does talk about the outrage that is hydrogenation and trans fats. So much of all sides are hypothesis. Hard to tell what is right. No doubt every person may react differently to these diets. As others have said, he didn't talk about factory beef and modern processing of food.

My rules have been:

- no hydrogenated fats.
- plent of fiber.
- moderation.
- no soda.
- avoid too much processing and chemicals, fresh and simple.

I may have to try less carbs and more fat though...

from what I've read in "Ab Diet" good book, despite the name, its goes on to say that 'trans fat' anything hydrongenated are basically fats that should be liquid in room temp, but thanks to procedure, they aren't. I tend to think they're pretty bad for you.

The other issue that is never addressed by "caveman" diets is how short life spans used to be. You probably won't get heart disease if you're dead by 35. Also nutritional need change as people age. The best diet at 21 will not be the same as at 41 or at 71.

Amazing, isn't it, how many parents put such an emphasis on fiber and veggies for their kids and refuse to give them sugar? As if a body that's growing needs the same things as a body that is only growing old...

My parents Never gave me ANY sugar growing up. Soon as I hit high school - bam! It was soda, orange drink and donuts for lunch every day.

Even worse than that. Hydrogenation takes rancid oils and makes them palatable again, though it chemically changes them to something harder to process (which actually results in converting good cholesterol to bad cholesterol in your body). From the vegetable oil industry standpoint, it's a way to get rid of garbage and make money on it instead. It also acts as a preservative when used in food processing, in the same way that any substance that doesn't break down fast would. It doesn't make it a particularly good food though.
