how long would it take our government to raise the fair tax rate? im sure they will and after a few years we will be paying more than the income tax rate. unless they attach some strict rules to it so it cant be raised

Pretty wacky considering I entered that I only paid $1000 in federal taxes this year.
That calculator is either buggy or deceptive.

I do too, but it will take us a while to get there. Will take a paridigm shift in the way we think about the role of government...that's why I like the 1% VAT

There's definitely something to be said for eliminating the IRS. That outfit scares me. I'd prefer the Fair Tax to status quo... and, of course, Ron Paul's plan above all.

If your choice is between the current tax system and fair tax, fair tax is far superior (just dont spend all your money on products).

If you have the choice of ron paul's system, that is far superior to both the above. Can't disagree there.

but again, if you are gonna shoot down the fair tax, don't do it in a way that tries to make the current system look like its better, because its not! PLEASE think in context of the system we are comparing it against.

For those that say they are in the negative on the fair tax plan, Please tell me you are not a college student putting in 10,000 (of course it isn't going to be good for a college student, you dont really pay taxes, but you do buy crap... and I do mean crap).

Considering the fact that when I go offshore for a month I pay 3500 in taxes for the month I prefer the Fair tax. To pay 3500 a month in the fair tax I would have to spend close to 10,000 dollars at wall mart. So as far as a tax I think everyone in this country should be taxed. While we are at it get rid of welfare for stupid people and keep it just for seriously disabled people that need it.

The Fair Tax is regressive. If you're poor you should not like it. If you're wealthy you'll love it. It's that simple.

The income tax is the most progressive. The very wealthy minimize the rate, and the middle class gets screwed.

The fair tax is bad though because it's a sales tax on everything, and doesn't distinguish between consumer staples and discretionary spending. This greatly hurts the poor.

I say a VAT on luxury items is the way to go. Tax BMWs instead of Fords, gold instead of corn, etc.

Good luck ever passing that one though.

Here's the only FairTax formula you need to know:

Revenue Before = Revenue After

In other words, FairTax backers will fight a messy political battle for years, trying to change how the same amount of money is collected from us in taxes. It's (practically) pointless -- the time and effort could be much better spent in trying to reduce spending.

If you try to reduce spending enough to eliminate the income tax, but get only 30% of the way there, your taxes go down by 30%. If the FairTaxers win. we still have a three trillion dollar federal budget.
