Had a discussion with a lady the other day on facebook which I felt went quite well. Any pointers for in the future or items I may have missed?

ME:Most people on both sides of the aisle are full of it. Paul Ryan's budget is a joke and Obama has been an abysmal failure. Drastic cuts need to be made to federal departments such as the Department of Education before eliminating them completely. (Education, HUD, Energy,Interior,Commerce) One only needs to look at D.C. schools to see how well they are managed by the federal government. The TSA is an absolute joke and needs to be eliminated. There is no reason airport security should not be privitized. Foreign aid needs to be eliminated. Foreign aid doesn't reach those who truly require it and taking money from poor people in rich countries to give it to rich people in poor countries doesn't make any sense. Bring the troops home from Afghanistan yesterday. We're so proud of having offed Bin Laden while he's rolling in his grave laughing. He wanted us over there to banktrupt us. Obviously we didn't learn anything from the Soviets and we sure as hell aren't safer having been over there ten+ years. Also, I understand having a few strategic bases worldwide but over 1000 is ridiculous to say the least. We have natural disasters here and the National Guard can't even help because their equipment is in the middle east! As long as any "Budget cut," plans have that little line going up instead of down the politicians talking about them are just saying a whole lot of nothing.

Old Boss: I couldn't agree with you more buddy. It's not about what's best for the country, it's about what's best for their party. Hell, if you're in debt at home you fix it by not spending as much, not by requiring your boss to pay you more!

Some dude: Quit being logical .... You've been kicked too much ...

Lady: Do you then advocate cutting the budget to the detriment of those who are NOT independently wealthy in the interest of balancing something that's a joke anyways? You want to take away public education, but is this a "well, if you can't afford private education then fuck you!" or do you have some other way to guarantee that citizens are afforded equal opportunity? Or do you not believe that people SHOULD have equal opportunity? Because if not, this is not the right country for you (see: Constitution)

I agree, for what it's worth, about foreign aid. And to some extent about our military's deployments overseas and the maintaining of overseas bases. But bringing those folks home doesn't a) magically make a job appear here for them, or b) magically create a need at home for that much military. So you either put all those people out of work or... do what? What's your proposed solution? I mean you seem to think you have (or the person you're advertising for) answers and I am honestly curious.

So you cut out jobs in various government departments as mentioned above, including energy, interior, etc. I'm not disagreeing that perhaps those departments need to be cut - so what do you do to employ those people who now have no jobs? Or do you leave them to die starving?

I'll ask to you, if you're willing to answer, what most people on my friends list are not despite their shared slurs against various candidates - what do you believe is the purpose of government (local, state, and national)?

Old Boss: 'Lady's name' how is the federal budget a joke? It's kind of what keeps this country going...to be fair, I don't think 'ME' is advocating the elimination of public education. But the reason we have a budget deficit is that we spend more money than we have. Hence, the government needs to cut spending in order to stymie said deficit. There is fat that can be trimmed everywhere I'm sure

Lady: The budget is not - the "debt clock" very much is

Some dude: I'd actually lobby for reducing federal education spending. Spending has more than doubled (per child) and test scores have remained level. Of course, you could just do away with teachers unions and reduce spending by a lot, but that's another soapbox for another time.

Some other lady:The Cartel talks a LOT about that. New Jersey as the example...

Me: The federal Government only has money which it takes from us which would serve it's purpose far more efficiently at the State or local community levels. There is no constitutional authority for the federal government to be involved in education. In High Schools and grade schools where parents and local schools have less authority over curriculum and school administration there has been an increase in violence, drug use and dropout rate with more centralized control. Having local schools experiment with what works best in their communities is a far better solution. A competition of ideas would work as it does in other endeavors. Right now the near monopoly on education makes it very difficult for alternatives to public schools to appear.

As for what happens to troops that come back from overseas. Many would be stationed on bases here In the states. But of course some will no longer be required to serve. What happened to the millions of troops returning from WW2? They integrated back into the public sector and the economy thrived even with the budget cut 60%. The local economies that benefit overseas from our military personnel would no longer have that luxury. Their money would now be spent in American communities. Those new bases/reopened bases here would also require newly created jobs filled to support the troops and bases at home.

For other department job cuts it would occur gradually and not all at once. If a job role does not act as a net benefit to society is it worth keeping? The people in those positions could put their skills to some other use. Similar goals sought by government programs could be driven in the private sector where competition drives efficiency and the best solutions to problems thrive.

The role of the Federal government is to protect our freedoms, have a strong national defense, look at and take care of our borders, and have a sound currency. The court system would be used for enforcing contracts, when people do harm to others, when people take or injure property, or pollute via private property rights.

Under the tenth amendment states have a "right," to retain all powers not explicitly granted to the federal government.

Not sure I answered all of your questions all that well but typing on my iPhone sucks. : )11 hours ago ·

Lady: Thanks for answering without vitriol - it is a rare thing these days. :)

ME: I know what you mean. Civil discourse on the issues that affect us most is far more satisfying.

Former Boss: NUH UH! YOU'RE A DUMB DOODOOHEAD!

Whats the federal govt got to do with public education???? This lady seems afraid like the elementary school down the street is gonna close up shop if the govt cuts spending..

You did great! They seemed receptive to the ideas ---> there were no objections to your points. I think you really got the wheels turning in that lady's mind.

Sometimes I think it's hard for people to take a step back and see how their enthusiasm channeled into attacks and ridicule act as a real turnoff to others who may not hold the same beliefs. I know I've fallen into that trap. My views have been challenged by threads on these boards and continue to be challenged by those who may not agree with me here and elsewhere. I think it's important to discuss issues with those that hold opposing views with civility. More good comes from that for all parties involved than by mud slinging. Who knows, you may learn something. I know that I'm far from perfect and all knowing. I think Richard Feynman said it best when he said '... I have approximate answers and possible beliefs and different degrees of certainty about different things, but I'm not absolutely sure of anything.'
