F-16 pilot was ready to give her life on Sept. 11

If I saw the plane was headed for D.C., I suicide myself against and fighter/weapon system trying to bring it down.

I have to laugh at this because I was thinking the very same thing, assuming I'm reading you correctly. If any of those craft should have made it to target, it would be the one heading for the Capitol or the White House.

The whole affair has stench all over it anyway, so this is fruitless. :)

I recall reading or hearing about this in news few days after 9/11.

Yeah holy shit.

I'm not much of a military person. I don't really understand dying for your country. Commendable because it's selfless, sure. Still, I'd have tried different measures than straight ramming if I were in that position... Remember large airliners aren't maneuverable, F16's are. They could have flown in front of the aircraft and try to mess them up with wake turbulence, try to push on the wing with their wing, to unbalance them, might as well try it if the other alternative is certain death. Maybe turn on the afterburner right in front of the wing or fly through the middle part of the vertical stabilizer and eject right at the point of impact.. I'd say an F16 flies right through, probably not controllable afterwards but structurally fighter planes are far superior to airliners.

Although, I can certainly understand not wanting to live anymore if you'd just caused the death of a lot of innocents.

I guess war sucks and I hate it but that doesn't change things sadly.

Well I guess Lt. Penney definitely is hero material.

But like Rand said at the forum WHY WAS NOBODY FIRED ? She'd have given her life because others, higher up in the chain DID NOT do their job. She was definitely 'Lucky' there.

I I keep wondering about this if something could have been reasonably improvised. It says they were still equipped with Dummy Bullets. Are those like blanks or do they fire the equivalent of Rubber Rounds or something? It seems like they could have been fired toward the Airliner engines mostly to see if they would be sucked in and seize the engine up.

Or released the IR lock counter measure Flares or Chaffs to see if they'd be sucked into the engines.

I speak entirely from experience watching action movies and playing flight sims.

I never heard of them being called dummy rounds. They are rounds or training rounds that are not the combat load of High explosive incendiary rounds. But you would use them the same way against him airline type aircraft, shoot the cockpit and the plane would go down. Quite an easy task. They have a safety device installed on the Gatling gun if you're not going to the range to practice strafing. That has to be removed from the outside by the groundcrew.

Bingo. Standard military ball ammo, just not the fancy exploding projectiles. If they had a mix of TP-T tracers mixed in with them it would be just like an old school WW2 engagement.
