Estonia-Finland pipeline/cable damaged (potentially sabotaged)

Estonia’s State Prosecutor joined with its counterparts in Finland in declaring that they had found evidence of human activity to the damaged communications lines in the Baltic and identified a Chinese containership as the primary suspect. Estonia reports it has filed an official request for cooperation from the Chinese authorities for the investigation into the containership NewNew Polar Bear.

Estonian authorities are taking the lead on the investigation into the damage to the Estonia-Sweden communication cable while Finland is leading the investigation into its communications and gas lines with Estonia that were damaged. Reports this week also suggested that a Russian communication cable may have been damaged at the same time but that is also excluded from the Estonian criminal proceedings.

Finland will demand its investigators be allowed on board the NewNew Polar Bear, a Hong Kong-flagged vessel whose anchor ripped up a subsea gas pipeline near Finnish waters in October, President Sauli Niinisto said.

It remains unclear whether the ship dragged its anchor for hundreds of kilometers “intentionally or as a result of extremely poor seamanship,” he told public broadcaster YLE TV1 in an interview Saturday.

More will be known when the vessel arrives in China and the captain can be questioned, Niinisto said. “We hope, and actually require, that Finnish investigators be involved.”

The physical evidence is pretty overwhelming that the NewNew Polar Bear (Chinese ship) is the culprit. They found the detached anchor that ripped up all the lines on the sea floor. They know the NewNew Polar Bear traveled the area at the time. They have photographic evidence that the NewNew Polar Bear is missing an anchor.

The only real question is whether it was deliberate sabotage (which raises issues with NATO as it was an attack on Finland's assets) or massive incompetence.

There are no courts anywhere that seek genuine truth or justice, but intent might be pretty hard to prove.
