Nathan Rothschild was the third of the 5 sons of Mayer Amschel Rothschild, and was sent to England to work for the British monarchy. Nathan Rothschild became a freemason of the Emulation Lodge on 24 October 1802 in London.

Marx's maternal grandmother was Nanette Salomon-Cohen. Nanette Cohen was the daughter of wealthy Amsterdam diamond dealer Salomon Barent Cohen, brother of the filthy rich financier Levy Barent Cohen in England.
Levy Barent Cohen´s children (Nanette´s cousins) intermarried with the leading Jewish families in England. Hannah married Nathan Mayer Rothschild, Judith married Moses Montefiore, Jessy married Meyer Davidson (also close to Rothschild) and his other children married into the Goldsmith, Samuel and Lucas families.

It’s strange that the Rothschild family is so infamous, but “nobody” knows the Cohen family…
On 22 October 1806 in London, Nathan Rothschild married Hannah Barent Cohen, daughter of the elite Amsterdam Jew Levy Barent Cohen, who had moved to England with his family. Hannah was both the aunt of Karl Marx ánd of Benjamin Frederik David Philips, who founded the Dutch “royal” Philips electronics multinational in 1891 with his son:

Already in May 1809, the Duke of Wellington (KG in 1813) was complaining to the British government that he didn’t have enough money to pay his troops. In March 1811, he wrote to the British PM Lord Liverpool, that he would halt the campaign if he didn’t get the demanded cash.
At some point before March 1811, the Rothschilds became involved in smuggling gold bullion from England to France. Nathan’s brother, James Rothschild, was in Paris and close to Napoleon. While James took care of the business in mainland Europe, exchanging the imported guineas for bills on London at Gravelines or Dunkirk. The other 3 Rothschild brothers relayed suitable bills to James from Hamburg and Frankfurt.
This was a breach of Continental System of Napoleon, who tolerated it and later even licensed it. Napoleon’s Minister of the Public Treasury, François Nicholas Mollien, argued that the outflow of bullion from Britain was somehow advantageous to France.
The money, apparently with the support of British agent Napoleon, was used to pay Wellington and also other British allies on the continent that were fighting against the French army. Previously such payments had been handled by Barings and Reid, Irving, but now Nathan Rothschild had taken them over.
From 1811 to 1815, Britain paid around £42 million to her allies. In June 1814, John Charles Herries listed the payments they had made so far to Prussia, Austria, the French King and the British army at 12.6 million francs in total.
The idea that Nathan profited from obtaining the first news of Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo to make a huge sum on the Stock Exchange, is another fictional tale:

In 1795, in one of those lucky “coincidences”, the French army of Napoleon invaded the Bavarian Republic (later renamed the Kingdom of Holland and finally the Netherlands). Willem V went to England.
In 1802, Willem V made a deal with Napoleon so his son, Willem VI, would get some territories.
The French rule was so horrible that suddenly the House of Orange Nassau became popular.
The patriarch of the Van Hogendorp family, Willem van Hogendorp (1735-1784), made a fortune by “officially” smuggling opium.
Willem’s second son, Gijsbert Karel van Hogendorp (1762-1834), became a lawyer and a real “hero” of the Dutch monarchy. After the Napoleon left the Netherlands, in 1813 Gijsbert Karel and 2 associates staged a coup to establish the Dutch kingdom with Willem VI crowned King Willem I, who had (also) become a Knight of the Garter in 1814, and Gijsbert Karel van Hogendorp as his prime minister.
Often overlooked in this “heroic tale” is that Willem’s eldest son, Dirk van Hogendorp, was a general in Napoleon’s army; even appearing in Napoleon’s testament.
Hans Derks – History of opium problem
I’ve read a relatively short book in Dutch on the VOC, NHM and the House of Orange as opium lords; Hans Derks – Verslaafd aan opium; De VOC en het Huis van Oranje als drugsdealers (2015).
What it lacks in length it more than makes up in shock value! It is really an excellent summary of a much longer book by Hans Derks.
Should I be as “proud” as Hans Derks of the pioneering role the Dutch colonial Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC) played in getting the world hooked on drugs?
