...The Republican nominee — and hot air expert himself — complained that he felt like he was in a "sauna."
“I think this ballroom and the people who run this hotel should be ashamed,” Trump said, as temperatures reached the upper-90s outside. “I think it’s actually cooler outside than it is in this damn ballroom.”
And then the threat: "You ought to try turning on the air conditioning, or we're not going to get you paid."
The hotel said that, actually, the air conditioner was on and working fine. But the Trump campaign had left the doors open for two hours to let guests fill in, giving the hot Virginia air plenty of time to waft in.
"Temperatures in the mid to upper 90’s, doors opened for two hours to let hundreds of attendees enter and the ballroom filled to capacity did present a challenge, however, Hotel staff did everything possible to keep guests comfortable and accommodated, both inside and out," the hotel's statement said.
Yet Trump, never one to let any slight — real or perceived — go, couldn't help himself. He said he's "really good" at the hotel business and owners can save money by cutting off the air conditioner.
His comments didn't exactly sit well with the locals.
"Trump’s comments were chintzy, low-rent, third-rate and wholly unbecoming for a major party presidential nominee," Roanoke Times columnist Dan Casey wrote. "But they are pure Trump, full of narcissistic bullying, worrying about his own comfort, picking on an entity that can’t pick back."
Built in 1882, Hotel Roanoke is a landmark in Southwest Virginia and listed among the National Register of Historic Places.
