It's quite true that the s could htf. Even during the great depression though, with extremely high unemployment, extreme deflation, banks failing, etc. The s didn't really htf in the respect that normal life didn't completely end as we know it. I think the best planning for the worst case scenario first involves excellent food and water storage and a way to protect it. Why would you try and get the hell out of town? Where would you go? I guess if you have a cabin somewhere with a bunch of food stored up where you can live indefinitely that's okay but IMO the reality is that we are still going to continue to live in communities like humans always have. If you can store some extra gasoline for the car, great. But I think a couple of tanks worth, just to keep you going in the case of temporary gas station closures, is plenty.
