Was thinking about this site and where it's going, and why I like it.

I like the new threads on news I would not find anywhere else

I like the activism threads in which anyone can join in on the discussion where you can read thru the thread

I like the discussion perspective overall in every thread to see things from which my mind does not see, therefore opening up my mind that much more

What do you think is the specific niche of this forum in the overall scheme of things?

Is probably a revenue generator better than anything. You're talking the biggest 1 day money bomb in history that largely came from the contributors here. I mean it's good for discussion and all and activism/communication and updates but essentially, it serves as a revenue generator. I would think that it was designed to be just that for the most part. The ad traffic alone is huge, and shared across many other relevant platforms, I'd imagine, but lot's of money has been donated through the site to campaigns and other ventures as well.

Heck, I've watched this site since it's inception. I haven't been a forum member the whole time but I've certainly watched it grow very closely.

But like Ann was saying. It's a rather loyal to their cause kind of mob placing all campaign revenue speak aside. That's just my perspective as one of those "noobs".

where are the ads if this site is such a big revenue generator?

Not sure if serious?

Sharpening, dispatching and disseminating counter-spin.

Brainstorming and drumming up/weighing support for initiatives.

Providing a news digest complete with fact check notes and 'spin gauges'.

Examining the long view in a manner historically accurate enough to actually be useful.

Trend spotting.

Organizing efforts at trend creation.

Documenting the injustice of those who pretend to be just.

It might almost be a shorter list to catalog what we don't do well.

My first reaction: LOL.

I love this place for casual conversations and mingling...
Organization and effectivenss? Not so much. Great potential but...

What RP forums does really well? Hrmmmm.... OK here goes. Preach to the choir. If we are to have any success at all in changing minds, the most important thing we can do is influence others. Spread the word. 3 minute soundbites that make people think. Slogans and catchy songs. Our people are so dumbed down by the idiot tube that it's the only way to reach them, but like RP often says "it's OK if they don't understand, because they can never un-hear the words" We need market research specialists to market RP's ideas the way they market Coke or Dr Pepper, because once it starts to click, (and it will) they'll have a starting point. I'm speaking from my own perspective, because I used to be a hardcore neocon, and voted for Bush Jr TWICE. I saw a bumpersticker that said "Google Ron Paul" and it changed my life. Criticizing our government only turns them away because no one wants to believe it, unless of course criticizing said government makes the opposite party look bad. I used to work for a market research company. We did not so much market the product as we marketed the package. The package was much more important, it had to be attractive, and convenient, and possess at least one extra feature that other similar products did not have. When we interviewed people, our questions were more along the line of "How much did you like the voice of the narrator?" rather than, "Did the gizmoidthingamabob product taste good?" I hope that makes sense.

We all like to think we have an open mind, but try criticizing our political party and watch how fast it closes. Criticism only works if that person is already doubting. In order to reach folks, we must first have their attention, in order to get their attention we must first have them on our side. Try asking a regular American to watch Osama bin Laden's speech explaining WHY. They feel the same way about anyone who identifies as the other party. So divided are we.

Entertaining people who live in their parents' basements seeking lolz and libertarian-leaning info and conversation?

That was then. People were banned from this site for trying to organize a money bomb for November 5th, 2011.

I think he means organizing revenue for candidates, blimps, etc, not money for the site itself.

I like all those things in the OP and the company, most of it... :p

A critical mass of people with whom to have rational discussions. And the occasional picture of a Newfie.

If they were it was because it was interfering with another moneybomb (Black this Out?) which was already well into the planning stages. Plus like it or not, OWS was identified with the V masks at that point. I don't know the bannings you are talking about, though. I do remember some angry back and forth. If there were bans it might have been more for picking fights than the money bomb.

Made the decision to use VBulletin... and the admins did a nice job making it look pretty and keeping it updated. And they got into the market at the right time so they managed to become basically the biggest vBulletin based libertarian discussion site on the web. Now we are all stuck here :)

I do wish the appeal here was to more normal people and less black helicopter anarchist types though. Most of you I do consider normal people.... but you know what I mean.

Dont look behind you....

It wasn't OWS or Black This Out. A news report said Anonymous was threatening a DDOS attack on facebook for that day. Anonymous quickly denied that the group as a whole was planning any such attack, it was just a small splinter group. The attack very predictably wasn't noticed, if it happened at all. But Josh Lowry was panicked that a successful facebook attack by anonymous would be associated by the media with a Ron Paul moneybomb on the same day. So he banned people that tried to promote anything for that day, starting in September. I then panicked at the prospect of activists being banned for weeks or months from one of the central hubs of the Ron Paul campaign at a critical juncture and -rep'd Josh. Oh, well. I guess it didn't matter either way, in the end.

To answer the OP's question, I think what RPF does better than any other site on the internet is provide a place specifically dedicated to the exchange of liberty oriented ideas and discussions. It does this better than other sites which have a similar purpose, in my opinion.

Congrats, you FAIL at logic.
