Divided Party Waits To Hear From Rand Paul At Maine GOP Convention

BANGOR, Maine (AP) — Unity is the theme for the state GOP's annual convention, but it's a divided party that waits to hear from U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, a potential 2016 presidential candidate trying to bridge divisions between the establishment and tea party wings.

Many view the invitation for Paul, R-Ky., to speak at the gathering Saturday as the party's attempt to reach out to libertarian-leaning members. They were angered by their treatment in 2012 after they took over the state convention and elected a majority slate of delegates for Paul's father, Ron, a former GOP congressman from Texas and presidential candidate.

Establishment Republicans challenged that decision and the national committee voted to replace half of Maine's delegates for Paul with supporters of Mitt Romney, the party's presidential nominee.

Rand Paul's White House ambitions for 2016 — and Maine's Republican Gov. Paul LePage's re-election prospects — may depend on whether the freshman senator can help mend internal divisions.

No state may point out Paul's challenge more than Maine.

he should lay into the establishment up there due to the outcome and treatment of our delegates and election process last election. he should call them out.

Rand should certainly do all he can to win support.

But as far as the spin in this story, F-them! It's our responsibility to make nice after they screwed us over? What kind of BS is that? I'll refrain from any analogies about forcing victims to please the criminals.

Edit: it seems that the most offensive line in the article has been removed.

i do believe there's no challenger any way..

Not in the primary, there is in the general, Shenna Bellows who is excellent on civil liberties against the patriot act and nsa, but otherwise a typical democrat.

I'm not persuaded to vote for either one yet.

Yeah, this is the part of politics that I suck at.

Their idea of extending an olive branch is to invite the most popular Republican in the country to help them win an election? Rand is a better man than I am for doing this.

That was the line that bugged me, spinning it such that it sounds like Rand (and libertarians, Tea Party types) must crawl to them to beg forgiveness for their sins.

I note that the offensive line is not (no longer) in the linked story. That line may have bugged a few people.
