A clip is a small metal pc. that holds the end of the cartridge 's in a group , like an M-1 rifle , a magazine totally encases the rounds ,like an M-16 , to the best of my knowledge . I imagine older guys who are Korean War or WW2 vets would call everything a clip .

Carolyn McCarthy said that she wanted to ban large capacity 'clips' after the Arizona shooting. Most posters here were commenting about her ignorance between clips and magazines so I felt like clarifying the difference to those of us (me included) who didn't know.
