Some Afghan media reported that insurgents fired rockets at the tankers, but it is still unclear exactly how the fires started. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, Reuters reports.
The fires lit up the night with a deafening roar, but there were no immediate reports of casualties.
“The number of tankers on fire is not yet clear, but based on preliminary reports from police around 200 tankers have been burnt,” Afghanistan’s Interior Ministry said in a statement.

At least four NATO servicemen were killed in an attack in eastern Afghanistan this morning, the International Security Assistance Force said.
Earlier, Ziaul Rahman Sayedkhili, a senior police officer in the eastern province of Parwan, said the death toll included six NATO soldiers, ten Afghan civilians and two Afghan policemen.

"Two days ago a rocket was fired from the village of Qalandar Khil which hit the Bagram (military) base and this morning a joint Afghan-ISAF operation went there to investigate the case," he said.
"There was a suicide bomber on a bicycle who detonated his explosives which killed ten local civilians, two policemen and six ISAF soldiers."
ISAF said in a separate statement four of its servicemen were killed.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in a text message to Reuters.

This ragtag group of tribesmen with their ancient weapons and without backing of any superpower have been able to hold off the most powerfull alliance of militaries in the history of the world and still remain undefeated.
In what is now the longest war in US history, to date 3455 NATO troops have been killed in Afghan war with many more injured. No invading force has been able to subdue Afghans ever in the history, not easy to write off the Afghan insurgents.

An Afghan security official quoted by the AP news agency said that at least 400 fuel tankers caught fire in a parking lot in the outskirts of Kabul.
