First off, that $10k bet was obviously not serious; he was just trying to reinforce his confidence that Perry was stretching the truth.
Second, Romney was correct, but the news is making him look "out of touch" for offering a $10k bet. (Instead of reviewing the fact at hand).
Third, and most important, this whole ordeal showcases how ridiculous the news is (not that we are surprised).

I mean, there is a lot to hate about Mitt - but killing him over this "bet" is stupid and detracts from real issues, real problems.

Dan thanks for posting that. It was exactly what I was looking for, actual incontext quotes. Unfortunately for Romney the essence of what Perry said is right. He modified a line that really was saying he wanted a plan like his at the federal level. Individual mandates whether it comes from the state or the federal government IS WRONG. No one should be compelled to buy something just by being alive.

that was my first thought when i heard the bet offer - not so much the amount (though that was appalling) and whether or not Perry had quoted correctly, you just knew he probably hadn't - but i didn't think good mormons were supposed to gamble on anything other than the stock market.

i wanted to bet a friendly dollar on the BYU vs UW football game with a kid i knew that was heading to school there and the guy turned me down i believe because of his religion. never have that problem with Notre Dame fans
