We have had pretty incompetent administration for last 8 years and things can be much better than they are today but despite all the problems, America is still the best country in the world overall. Our political system has been corrupted due to excessive role of corrupt media and lobbies but people still can change things through democratic process if they really want to. I have had a chance to travel a bit and there are bigger problems in most parts of the world. With much focus lately on what is not working, it is easy to lose sight of what is working.

So I ask you to vote for me. J/k, for a sec I thought I was running for office :)

Seriously, I can't think of a country that I would say is overall better than US politically, socially, culturally even today despite recent economic problems borne out of blunderous foreign policy. What you guys think?

Agreed there, I don't think anyone has any valid reason not to think so. The invalid reasons that make people think otherwise are these:

* Mass media in the US actually criticizes the government and cover society's failing, something which is hardly true in any other country. Hence, the US looks relatively bad when comparing to how mass media in other countries present their countries.

* Americans might be a bit spoiled and used to finding a better deal elsewhere if they find something lacking with what they've got, the grass is always greener on the other side.

* NWO organizations like Amnesty international etc that can't stop b*tching about the US while not covering atrocities in their ideal countries. Organizations like these want global socialism and don't want people to know about what's going on in countries like Sweden for example. The Amnesty reports on Sweden are just astounding.. Political and religious prisoners, mass kidnapping of children by the state, extrajudicial punishment running wild in the system etc, yet Amnesty just whitewashes it all.

I disagree. I can't even smoke marijuana in this country! The Netherlands FTW!

I think if you knew how bad our economic situation really is, you wouldn't be so cheery. :) We have some really fat ponzi schemes on the brink of collapse. Inflation is only going to get worse and worse and worse. Things might look fine now, but they aren't looking too hot in the near furture.

I would disagree. We are ranked roughly 5th on the world Economic Freedom Index and number #48 in the press freedom index.

Making us, not the best.

We could and should be a lot better.

I would be very wary of the press freedom index. It's mostly an index of how favourable work conditions reporters have, even if they collaborate with the government in not covering certain issues. Reporters aren't some holy fighters bringing truth to the masses, press freedom can't be measured by how the reporters themselves view their situation. What should be measured instead is how much of a country's dirty business reaches public knowledge. In Sweden, mass media has a 100% blackout on immigration problems, ethnic status of criminal offenders, damage done by CPS and similiar services in Sweden. They're collaborating with a tyranny in whitewashing it. The country has a news underground though, yet these news sites get labelled "racist" for covering immigration problems. They even have to run the sites on American servers since they would be shut down if they ran them on Swedish ones. Yet somehow this organization RWB praises Sweden with its index.. Communist scoundrels.

America has so much blood on its collective hands, I can't believe anyone would call it a great country, let alone the greatest

Are you serious?

Socially and culturally?

America is the wests leading destroyer of both.

It's isn't about where we've been in the past. It isn't about where we stand right now. It's where were headed in the future.

We are definitely headed downhill.

I remember the great quote by Ronald Reagan which I suppose could apply to many things.

"Are you better off today than you were four years ago?"-Ronald Reagan
