I think he's the only one.

Washington (CNN) - Sen. Jim DeMint, the South Carolina Republican and tea party favorite, said Thursday he was 'excited' about the possibility of Mitt Romney becoming the GOP presidential nominee.

While not an outright endorsement, it is the closest the Republican kingmaker has come to making his preference known in the race for the White House.

"I can tell conservatives from my perspective is that, I'm not only comfortable with Romney, I'm excited about the possibility of him possibly being our nominee," DeMint said. "Again, this is not a formal endorsement and I do not intend to do that right now but I just think we just need to look at where we are."

DeMint's comments came the same day Romney met with influential Republicans on Capitol Hill, including House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan. Like DeMint, Ryan has not publicly backed a candidate in the GOP race, but is considered a prized endorsement for the White House hopefuls.

DeMint said Thursday he was "impressed" after his meeting with Romney.

"His leadership skills, the fact that he hasn't lived his life in Washington. There's a lot to like there," DeMint said.

This, after letting Ron use his voice in robocalls? This dude is a major opportunist.

What's the big deal? Demint said Romney has leadership skills and hasn't been in Washington. This is all true. He didn't endorse him.

Demint is one of the good guys.

DeMint is one of the few non-libertarian Republicans who wants there to be more libertarian Republicans. I don't have a problem with him.

You mean you guys really aren't excited about the prospect of this man in the White House?! Look at the hair... look at it...

The thing is, DeMint has to know that a Romney nomination will crush EVERYONE downticket, and I mean everyone.

I could personally turn out hundreds for an even modestly libertarian Republican - I can turn no one out at all for an Obama clone in a GOP suit.

My understanding is that Demint is focusing on getting small government conservatives elected to the Senate.

Right, how do you sell small government conservatives when the top of the ticket is a big government Massachusetts liberal who needs to defer to lawyers (or Ron Paul) on any Constitutional issue?

I don't like Romney, either. Maybe he believes he is one hell of a lot better than the other most likely winner, Santorum.

DeMint already has his hands full with the establishment and the last thing he is going to do is talk bad about Mitt Romney.

Honestly, I'm disappointed.

I wasn't expecting much anyway...but still disappointed.

Yep, DeMint shows once again he is two-faced and belongs on the do-not-trust list.

My trust list is: Rand, Ron, and Amash. Possibly Mike Lee.

Possible trusts: Walter Jones, Dennis Kucinich.

Any trustworthy people I'm missing?

yes, this sucks that DeMint said it...

However, Jeremy is right. We seriously are going to start a shitstorm with every single person that doesn't directly endorse us? I mean seriously...this is what turns people off. The You are either with us or against us mentality is not good.

DeMint is 100% right. Romney won't kill the GOP's chances of taking the Senate as opposed to a DOA Santorum.

i blame JEB. not jim demint. yes, rick santorum is polling at those numbers. i blame JEB. not jim demint.

I agree with this and and would add Gingrich to Santorum. Both would torpedo everyone downticket.
