Deep sea submersible with up to five passengers and crew missing on Titanic wreck dive

I had a PC submarine game in the 1990s (Seawolf I think) that had a teletype ELF thingamabob. And I'm thinking that's the closest I'll get to a submarine.

That's exactly what it is: Narrow Band Direct Printing.

At MF radio levels NBDP used to be a component of GMDSS but they dropped that requirement.

A more modern and compact version of this

British Billionaire is on board...hmm.

Thrill-seeker pulled out of missing Titanic sub trip over fears it was ‘cutting too many corners’

Do they have food and water?

Is there a bucket, incase someone has to take a piss or shit?

WTF?

Missing Titanic sub live updates: Submersible aborted 2022 mission early after battery drained.

A Mexican man who made the harrowing undersea descent last year on the same Titanic-bound submersible that’s gone missing said the vessel’s battery suddenly drained during his voyage, forcing it to turn back early.

Actor and YouTuber Alan Estrada secured a $125,000 once-in-a-lifetime spot on an excursion to the famed ocean liner’s wreck on OceanGate’s Titan submersible last July.

However, the trip was cut about four hours short after the vessel’s battery levels unexpectedly plunged to below 40 percent, forcing the crew to head back to the surface, the vlogger said in a video posted on his YouTube channel.

The vessel also experienced a two-hour communications blackout while they were underwater, Estrada said.

British rescue mission for Titan ‘blocked by US officials’.

A remotely operated vehicle capable of winching the stricken submersible Titan out of the Atlantic has been blocked from joining the rescue mission by the US government, The Telegraph understands.

But despite receiving apparent clearance from the Ministry of Defence to leave UK airspace, the American government has allegedly yet to authorise the team’s request to join rescuers 435 miles south of St John’s, Newfoundland.

Mr Hunchak said US officials have indicated they would prefer to use a New York-based vessel capable of exploring 3,000m below water, whereas Magellan’s can plunge depths of up to 5,000m.

He added Magellan’s remotely operated vehicle was unique in that it was likely the only asset available to have a winch capable of dragging submersibles from the depths of the ocean. It can also detect signals and send them above the surface.

He told The Telegraph: “We have British, French and US citizens on board and every minute here counts. This is not a rational decision, this is the only asset we have with a winch and the guys are experts in this area.

“Why not run both vessels? The more help we can get the better and denying us means you are giving up on every option you have to save lives.

The OceanGate Expeditions tour group, which takes explorers to the depths of the Atlantic for $250,000 (£195,000) per person, is believed to have lost contact when the vessel was directly above the Titanic wreck.

Titanic sub went woke with staffing
The missing submarine Titan, from Ocean Gate is having new video surface on social media regarding the CEO, apparently stating they did not want 50 year old white guys with military experience like other sub companies. But wanted to hire based on inspiring others to get into the field. As DEI and affirmative action takes hold in society, we need to think about its impact on safety.

Or....maybe they should have followed the advice of this young diverse Gen Zer. Anti Federalist I'd rather be in a virtual sub just below the surface being fooled by tech that I was 2 miles under water than actually 2 miles under water with you. No offense. And she's probably cuter. :)

I don't understand why anyone would pay $250,000 in either case.

You're just watching a screen - something you could just as easily do at home.

So what's the point?

Now see, that hurts. I'd prefer being two miles below the surface than being the subject of a court proceeding, but I'd trust you to represent me as counsel. ;)

LOL - I understand, many people have a real aversion to sub sea work, especially that deep.

That said, upon further reading, it's not clear who is on board. I've read the CEO was part of the crew. So the DEI aspect would not come into play I guess.

That's a sign of pretty shoddy management, if you cannot produce a passenger manifest immediately

That said, I agree with Matt Walsh on this:

Yeah, and I'm sure she is.

Meh. I'm not sure the analogy fits. These people weren't down there discovering that graveyard. They weren't going wandering to find something unknown. They almost certainly would never make that investment in time and effort. They were seekers after thrills and status, people who are aggressive about dinner party small talk. They got on this thing expecting to be taken straight to this known location and back, expeditiously.

They paid a quarter million to look at images almost certainly not as good as what was in National Geographic years ago, in a vehicle with no windows, just to brag about it. Roger Ballard and crew they ain't, and they sure ain't Admiral Byrd.

Less is known about the deep sea than the surface of Mars, I would say less than 1000 human beings have ever been below two miles deep, so every dive to that depth has the potential for discovery.

So who cares if it's the swells spending their own money to finance a joyride for bragging rights?

You'd prefer the government fund them like Ballard and to some extent, Byrd as well?

I still hope they somehow save them, but I am afflicted with gallows humor.

Let me take a minute to set politics and technological quarrels aside, and reflect for a minute that five people have more than likely suffered a horrifying death at sea.

May Almighty God the Father have mercy on their souls and welcome them into his heavenly home.

Its own appointed limits keep;

O hear us when we cry to Thee

Keep in mind that the media organs defer to the government and US Coast Guard for pressers, but CG is utterly un-equipped for deep sea salvage and rescue.

Time’s Up: Titanic Sub Past 96-Hour Mark, Coastguard Says ‘Banging’ Noise is Just the Sea

https://www.breitbart.com/europe/20...oastguard-says-banging-noise-is-just-the-sea/

OLIVER JJ LANE 22 Jun 2023

A remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) searching for the Titan submersible has discovered a “debris field”, the U.S. Coastguard has said, raising the prospect that rescuers may now be searching in vain.

Update 1715 BST — the original story is below.

“A debris field was discovered within the search area”, says the U.S. Coast Guard’s first district command, the body coordinating the rescue mission for the civilian Titan submersible, which went missing on Sunday while diving to the wreck of the RMS Titanic.

The new data of a “debris field” has been passed to experts for analysis, said the USCG.

The development will not be a happy one for the now multitude of military and civilian ships, underwater robots, and aircraft patrolling a grid around the last known position of the Titan, as it may support the ‘implosion’ thesis.

When the submarine lost contact on Sunday, it was hoped for a best-case scenario where the craft had lost power but was undamaged, allowing those onboard to survive for days more with the 96-hours of emergency oxygen onboard. Yet if the experimental carbon fibre hull imploded from the immense pressure from the depth of water around the Titanic wreck would certainly have killed all aboard.

Hopes were raised this week when sonar buoys surveying the depths detected what was described as banging, which could have been caused by survivors inside the submersible tapping on the hull in the hope of being heard. Yet the USCG later said that after analysis, the sound was likely just “background ocean noise”.

That song brings back memories. When I was in boot camp we sang that song at the end of every Mass on Sunday. We'd sing that verse and then for the finale a verse asking God to watch over the Marines. As the few hundred recruits sang the last line, "from every peril to the Corps" we'd all shout these words and raise our open books above our heads and simultaneously slam them shut and shout "Oh Rah!". I never saw any service end like that. As cheesy as that story sounds now, that song holds a lot of sentiment with me. It was one of the few times we didn't have drill instructors screaming at us for stupid crap.

That thing was not a submarine. more like a high school senior project that you just did for the grade with no intent to use it .

I strongly suspect somebody didn't realize carbon fiber develops microcracks much like metal fatigue.
