Perhaps you all don't remember this, but Debra Medina ran against neocon Rick Perry in last year's Texas GOP gubernatorial primary. She had a bad interview with Glenn Beck (for which we all ought to forgive her...I personally think it was an intentional sabotage by GB), but other than that was a great Republican-libertarian candidate, winning 16% of the vote as a literal unknown in the face of two of the most well-known conservatives in the nation.

There has been talk as of late about her running for Senate as Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison is going to retire after her term ends next year. I think it is time to get the ball rolling...she needs to know that the support is out there. Below is a link to a facebook page made to see how the support looks so far. Please like this page so she can gauge how the field looks as she decides whether or not to run for Senate next year.

If you are not familiar with her, here are some links below. I would say she is 100% in agreement with Ron Paul and Campaign for Liberty. She is one heck of a woman...very well spoken and sticking to her guns through all the pressure from the traditional conservatives to give up some of her more libertarian leanings.

I like the idea, but I'm not sure how badly that incident damaged her name and if she can recover this quickly or ever from it...

we need to find out what her name recognition is and her favorables/unfavorables

You mean 16% of Republican primary voters in Texas. Sixteen percent of Republican primary voters in Texas is probably like 2 or 3% of Texans in general.

Right. My bad.

But regardless, the real vote count in the primary does not matter. And according to Wikipedia she actually got 18% of the primary vote.

I want to see her run for state representative first. Once she establishes herself, then her chances for winning a higher office increase.

Yeah, she had her "I'm an outsider" shot at a big race and she blew it. She's still electable, Rifleman is right, get her into a state-level seat and then run for Ron Paul's Congressional seat (she's in his district) when he retires (which will probably be soon).

I don't see why she isn't running for a state rep or state senate position at least? A senate position would be a stretch, but I think establishing herself as a true conservative is very important. If she runs when Perry leaves she could have some great votes and 'establishment friends' at her side.

She just needs to say, "I was misunderstood in the GB interview, I was saying that people have the right in a free society to question the government, I myself do not believe the government sponsored the 9/11 attacks". Repeat as needed.

The interview with Glenn Beck did not hurt Medina, it helped her, per polling data:

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2010/governor/tx/texas_governor_republican_primary-1082.html

The Medina interview with Beck was on February 11. At that time, Medina was at 17% down by 25%. The next published poll was not done until Feb 19-21 over ONE WEEK later! At that time, Medina was at 20% and down by only 20%.

If Medina's poll numbers had really dropped from the Beck interview, a new poll would have been conducted and published immediately, and then touted by the media.

The lessons here are;

1) don't get duped by media spin.

2) talking about so-called "conspiracy theories" (whatever that means) in an intelligent way does not hurt you in the polls even in a GOP primary.

As I recall Beck and/or his sidekick wanted Debra to repudiate those that questioned 9/11 and she used the word "despicable" to describe them. At least that's how I remember it.

Debra Medina was in first place with people who didn't think she was a truther after the Glenn Beck interview, and in dead last with a paltry 7% among primary voters in Texas that did think Medina was a truther.

http://publicpolicypolling.blogspot.com/2010/02/texas-poll-preview.html

Debra Medina actually leads the race with people who think she's not a truther- with 33% to 32% for Kay Bailey Hutchison and 29% for Rick Perry. But with voters who think she is a truther, or that she might be, she gets only 7% to 51% for Perry and 30% for Hutchison.

Trutherism is a large anchor that once hung around a candidate's neck in the voters' minds, ensures they have no shot whatsoever at statewide or national elected office. If Medina runs, all her opponents would need to do is say "truther" non-stop and it'd be over.

Find someone else for this Senate seat. Medina had her chance and blew it. Let her run for a nice gerrymandered U.S. House seat or maybe for the state legislature.

The problem wasn't that she lost a ton of support after the truther comments. It was that her skyrocketing numbers stopped almost dead in their tracks. She was on her way to the front of the pack and the truther comments were like a brick wall that wouldn't let her get above 20 or so percent. They definitely did serious damage to her, and that's what most voters now remember about Debra Medina. If she decides to run, I'd support her and hope for the best, but she's not our best candidate.

it's time to get over Medina. she is finished politically.

she didn't think quickly on her feet once and that ended her political career. it's sad, but that's how politics is. Rand Paul was possibly in a similar danger in the Maddow interview, but he didn't fall into the trap.

She could likely become a TX state rep. That's what is ready for her, if she chooses to run. It's a great place to be.
